Good luck with the coins. I also suggest looking for major varieties. As for sorting Cu and Zn 1982s, I just throw it on the scale if I'm not sure. The difference is big enough that you don't even need to calibrate it. With any luck you'll find a good one!

I sorted out the copper and zinc when I was looking for wheats. They are all copper.

Today I went to a small coin show and the supplies person wasn't there again

There will be another coin show at a different location, hopefully there will be a CherryPickers Guide for sell, if not, I'll get one off from ebay.

I would sort them first as mentioned, then look at the RPMs and doubled dies on coppercoins and see what is out there before looking at them. I would save them back sorted and then check a second or third time to see if you missed anything. It takes a whole for the eye to see varieties, but when you get that down, then your ready to go. Anything that looks different keep into tubes for further research. Then you can send them back or save them as copper. (Any BU or AU, I would save for future collectors or if something new is found, then you can go back through the cream of the crop and not waste time searching for undesirable coins later on.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Seal, I ordered the CherryPickers Guide from Amazon! I'll wait to look at the coins when I get the book. Time to organize them by year and mint mark while I wait.

I think you will still be sorting after the book arrives, looks like fun to me.

Numisma, I thought we needed to also look for the Cu and Zn for the 1983s as well?

Seal006, thanks for tip on Amazon for the book, I still need to get one for myself.

1983s are all zinc. However, there are a few known off-metal strikes in copper which can fetch quite a bit of money, so I usually weigh them if I'm not sure.

Thought there would be much more varieties and errors listed in the book.

It only lists the cream of the crop. The very best, most sought after varieties. These are the ones everyone searches for.

Do you look for errors or varieties on the coins not listed?
