Newbie question... Really a newbie!

Recently I was at an auction and a book of coins came up. It was a vinyl notebook with 2x2 pocketed pages containing over 200 nickels and pennies, all in the 1950's and early 1960's dates, mostly nickels. It seemed that I was the only person there interested in coins and I bought the item for $27.

The book has been exposed to water, and the 2x2 cards are badly deteriorated, staples all very rusty, but the coins seem to be in very good condition, all to an unexperienced eye, in nearly new state.

Most of the 2x2 cards are annotated with, "flat 62 reengraved nose", "recut rev", "horseshoe rev", "panchet obv", "roofed 5", "solid d", "reengraved profile", "d on a circle", "6 into rim", "bar 62", "flat 6", "misaligned die streaks", and many other such notes.

I believe these to be indicating mint errors, and/or damage to the coins.

I have redone one page of the 2x2s, repeating all of the annotations, but then decided that perhaps I should leave it all in the original state until someone else looks at them.

What do you think? Have I an interesting find, or perhaps just blew 27 bucks. I think, since all of the coins are pre-64, that they are worth more than face value, but are they REALLY something?

I will be happy to provide pics if anyone thinks it worthy.

Thanks for your responses.

For $27 I think you made a good purchase. It sound like there are several errors, I do not know enough to say if any of these will add any premium to the coins. You should check for any key dates, this is added value to any set of coins. Please post pictures.

Interesting. I think you picked up an old collection from a novice who knew just enough to be dangerous and was just annotating odd things he saw. I could be wrong. For $27 I would have bought it blind just for an hour of fun going through it

And...

I will try to get some quality pics of some of the coins so the details can be looked at.

Thanks for the replies

Tatorbug - I recently purchased the '89 Congressional 2-Coin, Proof Set from an ebay auction. When the coins arrived (in OGP with COA) the silver dollar looked great, but there was some odd toning on the half (which is a copper/nickel composite) . I went back and looked at some other items the Seller had listed and on one listing he mentioned that he was listing some things on consignment that had been involved in hurricane Sandy. I took the OGP apart to find that the metal of the case had serious rust. Of course I removed the coins and mounted them in flips.

I was wondering if your nickel/penny purchase might have a similar history. Your description sounds very similar. Sounds like a great purchase. Welcome to a great hobby and welcome to CCF. Jack

Jack, I have no information whatsoever on the history of the collection. It was a miscellaneous auction for farm stuff, household items, antiques, etc. The auctioneer
was not able to provide anything about the coins. What I've said above is apparently all of the information that I will be able to provide.

I'm trying now to get some decent pics of the coins

When I try to remove the coins from the flips, the paper comes apart. Most of the staples are completely rusted away. Coins are dull, but otherwise in great shape.

I have seen similar sounding collection come into my local
coin shops. The ones I have seen had writing on the 2X2's
that would have the owners interpretation of small errors
on the coins.

My suggestion would be, either purchase or get access
to the book Cherry Pickers Guide.

Use that book to see if you can identify any known errors.

There are many errors like die chips, Machine Doubling or
Grease Filled Die that add little or no value.

But there are some that are interesting to own.

I agree with the others that you did well on the purchase and you have a great first start to the coin collecting hobby.
