I recently bought a celestron 5mp usb microscope. This was to be able to quickly search for errors and varieties. To my surprise it takes decent pictures of the whole coin.

I've included a few test pictures of coins that were lying around on my desk and would like to hear your opinions and/or tips. I know alot of you will tell me to go buy a DSLR with macro lense etc.. I don't want to get into an expensive setup as I don't need it as of right now, these pictures are for my own amusement.

Thanks

Nice pics, Richie. How do you like the microscope for looking for errors? Is it easier/better than a good loupe?
And what software did you use to combine the obv/rev into one pic?
I'll be following this thread to hopefully learn a thing or two!

I like your pictures Richie. I was given a digital microscope for Christmas and I am learning how it works. One of the "tricks" I learned fairly quickly is to hold a sheet of black construction paper at different angles to change the lighting on the coin. It is amazing how much this simple little trick changes the quality of the final image.

I like the quality of the image you are getting, I think your microscope is a little higher resolution than mine. Like Natchez, I want to know how you are combining the two images into one, I see this with others on this site. Also do you use any type of shadow box? I have plans to build one soon and I want to know if anyone uses anything like this.

Hi Natchez and Oldephriam, using the microscope isn't quicker then using a good loupe but its alot easier on the eyes. So far I really like using it, the only thing it won't pick up easily are die clashes.(You have to move/rotate the coin so that the light hits the clash properly)

I use Photoshop to combine the Obv/Rev, I made a template that I don't need to crop the coins. The grey part is actually a layer with two holes cut into it and the coin image is inserted and scaled below that layer.(not sure I'm making sense). I can make this file available if anyone wants it.

I'd just like to add that Adobe has recently made Photoshop CS2 free for everyone. They just won't continue to update it.
