finally decided to jump in and catalog my OFEC collection, all shots taken with an iPhone using nothing more than a couple of $7 Walmart lights, 5000K fluorescent bulbs & opaque chloroplast-board diffusers. link in my signature to the photobucket album, comments and suggestions welcome here's a few of my favorites to show what you can do on a zero budget. Great images Wade! The iPhone has an amazing camera.
I do have one (very small) suggestion. When you're shooting silver and nickel coins, move the lights back just a bit more to try and avoid the harsh lighting that is seen on the obverse of the Cook Islands cent.

CBN, thanks, i'll play with the lighting a little more - still trying to learn the balance between the glare of proof coins with the details & shadows

I like these kinds of projects. Look forward to seeing more pics. I've been tying to do the same thing with my world coins but I can't get the lighting right.

it can be found at any hardware or craft store. the only draw back is it does tend to cast shadow lines that are really visible on proof coins. for my next project I will find something more opaque (like wax paper or white plexiglass) here's a few more favorites sao tome: sarawak: serbia: vatican city:

Those are spectacular pictures! Curious...did you make a light box out of the diffusers? and how do you get the black back ground? Would love to catalog my collection with photos like these!
Outstanding! and I totally need to know how to do this!

yes I made a light box out of the chloroplast,
I used a piece of black felt for the background, and raised the coin about 1/2" above the felt with a small cork. it causes the coin to stay in focus and the background to "wash out" - which makes it easier to fill in the background with solid black when post processing.

Excellent photos! Amazing that these are all done from an IPhone. Do you use a tripod or a mount to keep the phone steady?

I honestly use an elastic band to hold the phone to a small cardboard box about 4" above the coin (allowing the phone to "reach in" to the lightbox). I use the volume control on the factory earphones to act as a shutter release. VERY amateur but considering the results I'm ok using the "welfare" setup ! recently upgraded a few:
