Recently purchased a lot if 52 uncleaned AE for $35 to cash in on combined shipping with another lot. I did not expect many keepers, but to my surprise, this fell out of the bag:

The legend is too worn to read on the obverse. Still working on who the buse might be. First impression was Marcus Aurelius, but not sure now.

Reverse is definitely Mars. Reads "MARTI-"

Weight is about 2.56g--a little light for a denarius, but this coin would also be pretty small for an AE of the late 2nd century. Color in hand is a dull grey--probably very debased billon.

Thoughts?

A little worse for wear but it looks like a silver denarius.

I think the bust is Commodus.

Facial features seem too stout for Commodus. My current theory is Caracalla.

The shape of the head suggests Domitian to me.
If it is silver, it is a denarius.

At first glance I also thought it looked like Domitian but he didn't mint any reverse types that featured Mars as far as I know.

I am inclined to believe that this is Septimius Severus, something similar to this type: http://www.coinproject.com/coin_det...?coin=294893

I was thinking for the reverse:
Minerva advancing right, weilding javelin, with shield at the ready.
Nevertheless I am open to being converted to a Septimius Severus type, where the spear? is at the right angle.

I also think for SEptimius Severus : on the obverse you can see the beginning of the beard under the chin and the head is not as round as on Domitianus coins , on the reverse :the figure has no or little clothes.albert

The 'look' of the silver says it is debased (3rd century) while the portrait is obviously Severan. Septimius is the best bet. The reverse is clearly Mars 'striding right'.

Think I found the portrait match--Septimius Severus is spot on! Thanks all!
