Been pretty slow around here lately, finally got my first coin of the New Year so I thought I would post it.

Leo V the Armenian/ co-emperor Constantine (son) 813-820. Leo was known for his long war with the Bulgars and their finial defeat. Leo was also an Iconclast emperor which was first started in 726 to 787 by Leo III and reinstated by Leo V in 814 and lasted until 842. Leo was assassinated by supporters of Michael II the Amorian on Christmas morning while listening to hymns at church. His son Constantine and the rest of the family where exiled to the island of Prote, where Constantine was forced to become a monk.

Here is an interesting Wikipedia article on Iconoclasm.

Nice example of the type, Ron...good, clear features. Call me crazy, but I often enjoy more simplified, linear, abstract depictions like these than highly refined, more naturalistic ones.

I agree in the simple style of the iconoclast era.

Nice pick up, I agree that theses are simple yet attractively designed.

I will be keeping my eye open on the Byzantine front myself, I have been having stress with a dealer who seems now to be an Ex Vcoins dealer. First my coins were lost, then the replacement wasn't sent out and no response as to why the refund hadn't been dealt with. Vcoins support chased it up now and I finally got a refund - frustrating thought that I didn't get the coin I wanted (Maurice Tiberius half follis) after two selections falling through.

Wow, between that story and the Arados bee/stag drachm saga, David, I'd say you're due for better numismatic luck in 2016...

nice ski! yours actually has some legend, which I think many are missing.

I have one of these, but it isn't as nice as yours. I did pick up this related coin last year, I don't think I ever posted it here.

David sorry to hear about your troubles with that dealer, glad to hear that he is an ex-Vcoin dealer now.
