As many know, the coin market is based on values assigned by a given state of preservation (grade), many third party services offer their opinion on the current grade of a coin. Grading is at best subjective and ultimately, you will have to decide if you agree with any grade assigned. Here are links to the major services along with several other services provided just for referrence.

The top four services in the coin hobby are

1. NGC
2. PCGS
3. ICG
4. Anacs

All other services are considered on a lower tier by the general coin community and should only be utilized once you are very comfortable with your ability to authenticate and grade coins.

Top four services:

http://www.anacs.com/

Others:

http://www.pcicoins.com/

http://www.globalcertified.com/

http://www.ccgcoin.com/page2.html

http://www.segscoins.com/

There are other services out there. Many will share simular names to those of the top four. Be very careful in choosing any third party grading service. Check out their guarantees.

The only problem with this type of survey is that PNG along with the ANA SELL their endorsements. So as long as the top two companies have the ability to BUY the great service recommendation it does very little.

If you were new to this hobby would you go with NGC or PCGS.
I have looked at some of the prices at the PCGS web site and I think that maybe I should grade some of my coins...
What do you Ladies and Gents think

I think any third party grading service is money well spent if you're dealing with coins. People will pay more for a coin that has been graded for piece of mind that it hasnt been altered and is genuine.

In my opion you only want to buy a coin that is slabed by one of the top four. This is how I see them ranked
1. Pcgs
2. Anacs
3. NGS
4. ICG
I would not buy any of the others out there they more then usally grade a coin higher then it is. that is just my opion

I decided to start a graded type set from my raw types about a year and a half ago. I went with ANACS because I could send them directly without a go-between and it was a little cheaper. I had too many nice coins to leave to my kids without knowing just how nice they were. I've sent about 90 coins in and there are always surprises, both good and bad. It is obvious to me no one will be completely satisfied with any one grader with all coins. I have an NGC 63 come back a 61. An NTC 64 come back 58 cleaned, and PCGS 63 come back as a 61 and one NTC 62 gold dollar come back as counterfeit. I now have a nice 53 coin type set all in ANACS holders but if I had it to do again I would have left it a mixed bag of graders. I also learned I cannot predict what a coin will grade. Everything concidered, I am not unhappy.

Well I decided to go with PCGS they have a good wed site with a lot of info, If you get the $200 membership you get 8 submissions free.
At even $18.00 ea. That is not bad every thing I have read it seems like you get more money for pcgs graded coins.

I was reading the above at work. When I got to the gold dollar part, I yelled out some a bad word.
