Hi there, I found this coin while going through some pocket change. I searched and searched online, but wasn't able to find much of anything about it. The P mint mark is extremely weak, but all the other details are very clean. The only thing I was able to turn up was one page with a photo and a brief story similar to mine. The photo below is from that page, but this is exactly what my coin looks like. Any thoughts?
I found another quarter with an even weaker mint mark. If you look closely the A in America, the st in Trust and We all appear to be weakly struck. The mintmark is not raised much at all, but is barely visible. Does this look like a Grease Filled Die only or a weak strike of sorts?
If the devices are thinner on the area in question compared to the side by side example, it maybe a case of over polishing. If it were a grease error, then these devices would be wider or completely gone. (depending on how the grease filled in the die)
Thank you. I looked carefully and the devices are not thinner so it is a grease error. The P mint mark appears relatively clearly in this macro photo, but when I first found the coin, it appeared as if it had no mint mark.
