Many members have indicated they collect certain themes in Nclt coins. Especially with so many releases. I know one member collects the silver baby feet coins. I collect wolf, horse type coins. Along with silver dollars and the silver proof sets. I also add in the occasional animal coin if I like the depiction. I know another member collects the animal theme. There is trains, planes, sports, historic people, mountains to name to few.
It would be great if some photos could be added. Its time to brag about your collections!! Unfortunately mine are securely packed away, where I cant get them at the moment. The talk about registry sets, got me wondering what others focus on. Edited by pocket change 50 01/11/2016 04:43 am

I don't even know what NCLT is.

NCLT = Non Circulating Legal Tender Issued by the mint with a face value so it's "legal tender" but not put into circulation. For example, the commemorative silver dollars such as the one in my user ID.

It an abbreviation for Non-Circulating Legal Tender. Google " Royal Canadian Mint" and you'll find all kinds of examples that have been recently minted.

Not a theme collector. I only collect what has some special significance. For example I live in a lightening belt so I purchased Summer Storm and to commemorate the Queen's longest rein instead of buying the newly released proof coinage I purchased the 2004 4-coin/effigy 50c set that also compliments my 50c circulated collection.
The reason I don't collect themes is because....well, my first thought is of a friend who's entire house became filled with chicken objects, far more than she ever wanted. Word got around to friends and relatives that she collected chickens and so that's what she was given as a gift for every occasion. far beyond the point of her admitting enough was enough. The other reason is a collector of themes, I know myself well enough, I'd be the type to buy for the sake of completion to the theme whether or not I really liked the artist's creation overall. And what of wanting something different - will that be the start of a new theme collection? Nope, too complicated and defining for me.....

I like Coins of the World, except the Disney coins. Its fun to see what mints from other countries come up with. I have the Discover China set and would like to get the Mythologies of the World set if it's still available when I can afford it.

I guess you could say my collecting theme is "Canadian History," but I'm more of a series collector than a theme collector.
As many here know, the majority of my Canadian coin collection is comprised of Canada's 36mm commemorative silver dollars. The themes selected for them over the years cover quite a range. Early exploration of what is today Canada, Canada's development as a nation, British Royalty milestones, military history, Canadian industry, sports (especially hockey), Canadian culture and many other topics/themes have been commemorated. I purchase them all, however, because they are part of the silver dollar series.
When I stray from this series, it is for a coin or coins that mark important events in Canada's history. For example, I purchased the four $4 silver coins of the "Heroes of 1812" set. The developmental histories of Canada and the US were unequivocally impacted by the War of 1812, so it was easy for me to "convince" myself to stretch beyond my silver dollar focus and purchase the coins.

I collect the annual silver dollar each and every year, regardless of its theme.
I collected the entire Group of Seven series and then moved on to Emily Carr, so you can definitely say that I like to see Canadian art on NCLT coins. Aside from that, I might grab the odd piece that depicts the maple leaf(s) or an event in Canadian history - if it has the right appeal.

I'm trying to get together the full set of Australian Kookaburras . . . going to be tough especially as I'm trying to pick up earlier years at a reasonable price and they don't come up at auctions often. Collected the RCM Wildlife series and the Birds of Prey series which is nice in terms of artwork but I'm tired of milk spots on maples from the RCM and won't be getting any more.

bmel, its great to hear from new members and what they collect. I hope you enjoy yourself here. A lot of great people and knowledgeable collectors. I guess I should have phrased the question more to how do you collect, it would have been a better fit. I too am put off with the milk spot on the maples. I like the wildlife birds of prey and the odd privy mark. I hang back, scared off by the spot issue. So I get an occasional one.

These are very nice, but right, the milk spots distract from collecting them. Did you see the Perth Mint Australian Wedge-tail Eagle series (2014, 2015, 2016.....)? - imo it is great. I couldn't resist from buying proof one and 2014 BU. To bad it commissioned, so the commissioner dictates the rules.

First is eye appeal, then something cool to Canada, a swimming beaver, kids who cares I could be wrong but I don't see the appeal of the GITD wolf coin other than mintage, each to their own.

John for me the appeal is I collect the wolf theme and live in the mountains. I see mountain vistas daily. I am not 100% on the coin. I will wait until in hand, too see if it is an awesome coin. The web page depiction doesn't always work. However, I didn't want to pay a premium, so I gambled.

I collect the $x$ coins and the o'canada series if they look good. Also the small gold coins, and the maple leaf silver coins. I am a platinum member at the RCM.
