I have been looking at the 1973 Prince Edward Island Commen dollar. I have noticed there seems to be different finishes. What are they. The ones from the double dollar sets have a beautiful shiny finish, they seem better struck too. Then I also see some that look circulated and the strike not as defined. Please educate me on this nickel dollar. Photos would be great!

Three different strikes for 1973. Those from the double dollar sets are specimen strikes with brilliant on brilliant finish. These specimen strikes were also available singly in clamshell cases. There are PL strikes from BU sets, which are not quite as brilliant or as well struck as the specimens. And then there are circulation dollars, not struck especially for collectors.

Thanks, dbm it explains the differences, I've noticed in ebay ads. Some look down right horrid. I don't know about the circulation strikes or the cased ones. Is there and varieties, or special ones to look for.

On the Business Strikes, you can look for a 360 Degree Die Crack that links the beads. On the BU and Specimen Strikes, you can look for Doubling of the date and beads.

DBM's explanation is excellent... that said, the cartwheel lustre on some of the 1973 business strikes can be downright spectacular, and can carry the best eye appeal of the entire business strike nickel dollar series. Here is my business strike 1973 dollar (PCGS MS-66), and I absolutely love it. 1977 is another year where you can find really nice cartwheel lustre.

The '73s are a particularly attractive strike.

Huh, I've never seen that coin, but I gotta say, the design is not very good. Especially when the ONLY coin from PEI has such a great design! You think they would have at least incorporated the Oak tree on it!

Wow SPP a fantastic coin, I perused some of your ebay listings, what amazing coins you have on offer. It must take considerable time to find the specimens you have. I had thought there was no interest in modern non silver coinage, boy was I misinformed. Most topics are on pre 1967 coins. I am starting to rediscover the nickel dollars. I fell in love with a high grade 1984 proof commen you sold. I stared for about 3 mins. I love rediscovering old coins. Most of todays current stuff is boring. Lately I am learning a boat load, thanks to this form.
