I posted much of this in another thread, but figured that there was enough within my originally intended post to make a new thread (and subsequent discussion) oh crap... the mint has just suckered me into collecting 2016 coins. http://www.mint.ca/store/coins/2016....VpUyghUrLD4The security features have been removed from the loonie & toonie! I personally thought the security features were a lame ploy to excuse the steel plated coins - and I never cared for any of it. I wonder if the rim lettering will also be gone on the toonie. Has anyone else notice that the quarter doesn't have a year on the front? The mint description says; Quote: An enduring symbol of the Canadian north, the majestically-antlered caribou has remained a Canadian icon since first appearing on the twenty-five-cent piece in 1936. Which is odd, because last time I checked the 1936 quarters still were of the older leaves design that all our coinage had - and the revised for 1937 coins were issued late enough in the year, that the 1936 'dot' coins were minted... (it probably didn't help that Edward VIII abdicated the crown in December 1936 - after his predecessor George V passed away on January 20th of that same year) I recently saw a full set (penny, nickle, dime, quarter, and fifty cent piece) of brass 'mule' 1937 coins - now that was pretty cool!

Those brass version was a kind of trial strike by the Paris mint, not a mule.

I don't get it. Why were the security features added and are now being removed?

Makes sense to me! Anybody interested google it, but somewhere you'll find mention that the *multi-layers of steel coins are manufactured in such a manner that coin and vending machines can detect counterfeits by the composition alone. The security feature has become obsolete.....if it ever served it's purpose. *Multi-ply plated steel technology

I was about to make a remark that the quarter has no date at the from but you beat me to it.

Do you have the coins in hand yet? Anyone want to bet against me that they will not match the photos and have the security features? (Because the RCM has never done that before! )

the page shows that someone already asked this question, and it has been confirmed that (for the loonie at least) the security features are not present on the 2016 coins.
EDIT: I just asked about the toonie, and quarter. :)

I will not bet against you Roger. Photos on the mint site mean nothing. Check out the photos of the gift sets with the fancy loonie and you'll see a pic of the security toonie and a quarter with the date on the reverse, where it belongs. I put little faith in the stock images.

Well if nobody gets one sooner, my shipping advice from CCC indicates my order including the Uncirc Set is supposed to arrive on the 19th. I'll post a pic. Add: It's rather odd how the RCM "Staff Reviewer" answers the question regarding the security feature. It's as if it were simply a figment of one's imagination and it was only ever a minuscule maple leaf.

Yeah, I asked a question about the security feature too. I haven't checked if it was answered yet. Someone said on another thread, it was probably a marketing ploy, so they would get minting contracts. Smaller nations are probably very interested in these features and showing them off on domestic coins is a brilliant idea.
I will be glad if they are gone. Boy were they ugly, I much prefer from years prior to the security feature. They know how to destroy the looks of a coin. Pacific great comment, I had a great laugh. Oh by the way we are getting a new effigy sometime this year, according to my rep.

After taking a look at the 2016 Gift Set stock photos,
the toonies HAVE the security feature.
Are there going to be two types? :O

Quite honestly I love the security features, especially on the $2 and I don't think they will revert to the old version. I greatly prefer the looks of the improved $2. It also gives of a very modern cash-feeling for foreign people like me. I only think it's a shame the lower denominations are still unchanged, since everything else ($1-$100) is as modern as can be.

The 2016 gift sets were at the post office today. The 2 dollar has the security features. The 25 cent has the date where it usually is on the reverse.
