This one didn't exactly work out according to plan. I bought it in a PCGS holder and as usual broke it out. I found that it had a lot of goop on it and so I gave it a bath in Xylene, then Acetone, then a long soak in Verdi Care. The results show some progress but a lot of hidden verdigris on the reverse that I can't remove. I'd appreciate your opinions on grade. Member ANA and EAC "You got to lose to know how to win". Agree VF-20 details. You've done all you can. STAY AWAY FROM THE XYLENE.

VF20...after that I don't think you'll he able to clean it up anymore. When you soaked it in verdicare did you try a toothpick on the verdigris? Ive had some luck with fairly heavy stuff using that combo

Thanks everyone - it was in a PCGS slab "Damage - VF Details". I thought the details grade was a result of the small marks on the obverse. There was no visible verdigris. After the Xylene and acetone baths the verdigris was quite visible. Verdi Care removed some but not all. In hand the coin looks quite good but in my detailed pictures - ugh... Just a couple of follow ups. Coinfrog Quote: Stay Away From the Xylene I'm not sure why you're saying this so please explain so I can understand better. Acetone and Xylene are both organic solvents but acetone is polar and xylene is non-polar and so do different things. I started a thread nearly a year ago and with the help of the experts on the forum got amazing results using both acetone and xylene plus verdicare. Search "Can this large cent be saved" March 2015. panzaldi Quote: did you try a toothpick on the verdigris Yes I did use a toothpick after the verdicare and made some progress but the stuff that remains is not going to be removed.
