Was wondering what people's consensus is on the rarity of low grade 1948 silver dollars? Did many circulate to the point of being VG or lower or were they simply put away due to the low mintage?

I think a 1948 is much harder to find in circulated grades, because people at the time knew they were rare so they stashed them away in mostly bu condition, so I've been told, and so I've read, though it may be anecdotal. But does make sense.

Lowballs, always an interesting topic! I'm sure our knowledgable seekers of such will have an answer.

Makes sense I guess. I never really thought about it until recently and stumbling upon lowball threads. I do find it quite interesting though, and see the beauty in it.

Even a VF 20 is scarce. I have been looking for a no problems Good 6 or worse for over thirty years for my low ball set. The only other one I still need is a 1951 .
The 1948 Silver Dollars were minted in December of 1948 during a one week run just before Christmas. Jim Charlton was paying a premium for the coin as early as 1949. In the opinion of many , myself included the 1948 Dollar is an overrated and overpriced coin. You can find at least 20 for sale on any given day . All it takes is a Canadian Peso cheque to acquire one. Of all the 18,780 pieces coined probably all 25000 are still available. LOL

Lol Pacific, you are completely right about the ease of purchasing a high grade 1948. I have seen some of your posts in lowball threads throughout the boards.

The 1948 was the coin that started an interest in numismatics for me. About 4 years ago I acquired a near MS 1948 dollar through a friend who had me convinced I could turn a profit on it. By shear dumb luck and knowing nothing about numismatics, I managed to sell the coin a couple days later to a lady who had visited my bullion/jewelry booth, and mentioned she was a coin collector. She explained that she already owned a 1948 silver dollar, but was looking to upgrade and asked if I'd be interested in taking her's as a partial trade in. The funny part is, I knew so little about numismatics I wouldn't even offer her 100 dollars trade value towards my 1948. In my eyes, it was a worthless coin that was worn to crap and after all, the book(Charlton) I was reading had no value for a coin below VF20, let alone the grade it was lol.

Oddly enough, about a year later, after having gained interest in numismatics, I was reunited with that same 1948 silver dollar that wasn't worth anything to me :)

At 18780 minted, it is scarce, not rare.
I have never seen a Canadian silver dollar in less than VF condition. That would make an example in VG condition quite rare. Most common grade is probably around EF.
After all, later dates did not circulate very much.

It does not surprise me that there are 20 or so for sale at any given time.
There are only 37,000 or so members in the CCF Worldwide, where the majority of members are in the U.S.; the U.S. market for U.S. coins is much larger.

That relativity tells me that a 1948 Canadian silver dollar should be readily obtainble, if you want to search all dealers in Canada.

At the major Toronto shows some times you see a lot 4 or 5 au to ms 62 units, but the last few shows barely see one unit.

Hey Pac, you had mentioned in other threads that your criteria for your lowball set is G6 and below, honest wear, and no damage. I'm very curious what an example of a KGVI G6 graded silver dollar would look like. Clearly quite scarce, as I cannot seem to find any examples. Based on my limited experience in those grades for this series, I do not think I can differentiate between G6-VG8

At the Calgary Show in September I saw 4 or 5 '48 Dollars. I think they were all AU55 and higher.

A descriptive for a Good 6 something like "Hair details completely missing and worn through to a completely flattened earlobe.cheek worn flat. Dentils wearing to a flattening rim. " The reverse would show canoe and voyageurs worn flat little details to tree and Northern lights.. My own further criteria the coin must have nice original grey colouration , never cleaned , no damage such as graffiti, holes , edge knocks.
Recently added a 1946 purchased from our own SPP , one day will try and post a pic. ICCS G6.

Pacificoin-
By your criteria, would you grade this at G6?
That is what I have it graded as.

Thanks Pac, that helped a lot. I would say I'm looking at a VG dollar.
