I'm finially have decided to get another pocket piece after my Lucky clad IKE was stolen along with my book bag. I decided I want silver but I'm having a super hard time deciding. I'm mostly worried what I choose won't wear down well due to the coin design and will look like a cheap token or something. I have a approximate $20-$25 budget. One of my first instincts is to get maybe a 2015 ASE for symbolic reasons such as my first niece being born etc. I love the obverse and know it wears well because I collect walkers. I'm not as big as fan of the reverse stout heraldic eagle though it wears ok. 1987 2001 2005 2015 are the most important years. 2008 is the only Canadian year I would use. I have found a proof march of dimes dollar in my budget but it has milk spots which I'm pretty sure will come off in my pocket. I'm kinda concern about wheter the design will wear down bad at ag due to low relief. Would milk spots come off with circulation wear? I also saw a place that you could get a random proof comm dollar for 17.99. Those it frightens me that maybe I get a design I totally dislike. Does proof coins or uncirculated coins wear more attractively? The Statue of Liberty coins are cool and I could get a half and the dollar for $20 and is a year before my birthday. I just don't know if I like the pictures of them worn I seen. What are your guys opinions? Do you have any modern commendatives that you got down to low grades that you wouldn't mind showing? I know there is other pocket piece threads out there but my needs was pretty specific and most of them haven't got 5-10+ years of wear on them. Also does lower relief simpler designs or higher relief complex designs typically wear more attractively? As much as I like the USO dollar I'm afraid of the text Edited by Bertensgrad 01/16/2016 1:06 pm

Find a silver dollar that was painted or something like that. I bought a ASE with a picture of Reagan on the front.. it was printed on the coin the year he died. It is my pocket piece.. I also have a 1935 CA dollar, that I bought that was horribly cleaned. so now it gets pocket wear to "wear" out the fine scratches from a harsh cleaning.

I have no qualms about using a impaired, milk spotted, or slightly damaged body bagged coin but ones that been intentioning altered post mint such as coloring I don't want. The end goal is a problem free coin that I can passed on to my niece and tell her I kept it since it was new to remind me of of her. It's why the milk 2015 March of dimes is tempting though the design hasn't grown on me. Since she was born 2015 and it promotes baby's health haha.

Both too big. Too much weight, and too much volume in your pocket.
Use a common date Walker instead.
Everybody will appreciate the design, and there is less chance of your trousers falling down!
You may even be lucky enough to find a holed Walker in a dealer's junk bin, or perhaps find a removable frame for an undamaged Walker. Attach either of these to a key ring.

I'm used to carrying a Ike dollar and a half dollar at once so not concerned about the silver dollar just have to check if the silver eagle fits my pocket

I like it in my front jeans change pocket. Edit. Just tested out a 40 mm two ounce coin in an airtight and not a problem. I just wish the American silver eagle had the reverse of a Walker half dollar or the eagle on back of the congress bicentennial comm.

Don't do a proof (Eagle or commem) The mirrors surfaces don't age well and I don't think you will be happy with the end result appearance. Also the .999 Eagle vs .900 commem will wear a little faster but if you can't wait 20 years to wear it down you will need to add some other coins in various diameters into the mix. Also once you finally wear the rim down far enough from UNC condition it will wear at a much faster rate. The first few miles will show the least results so don't give up if you don't see to much progress right away. And like you mentioned get a coin that has some significance for you. The commem series offers you more options while the ASE would only be the same year as your event. PS: you could always cheat and file the rims down first as the coin will eventually wear down enough to wear the file lines out of it. I might have to do that next January 1 if I change something out in my pocket.

That's a nice looking statue of Liberty makes it tempting to get the silver dollar half clad combo. When I visited the island in college it was something I thought would be disappointing in real life but it was the best part of the trip. Seems like I'm mostly stuck between that and a ASE. Walking Liberty halves are my favorite coin if only the ASE wasn't so common.

Sounds like you have already made your mind up. I only went with the Ellis Island as it is the cheapest commem out there. I would again recommend an UNC vs proof if you truly want to keep it as a momento and put int he work needed for a pocket piece.

I got to admit now that would be a noticeable amount of weight in ones pocket. Anything smaller then a half and it would be lost in days with me. I like something big to fiddle in during meetings and church.

I carry the 1994 U.S. Capitol commem dollar and I enjoy it. Great design that's wearing well. I would go with a commemorative dollar from one of those years... Personally, from your list of years, I would choose the U.S. Marshals unc dollar.
If you want to save up a bit, a 2001buffalo unc dollar would be sweet, but I'd be nervous I would lose it..

I love this post - been considering something like this myself. I like the 1987 Constitution $1 and the 1986 $1/2, and have been sleuthing on ebay for a deal on something already a little rough that might go for cheaper. I've also been wondering which is going to look better after months/years jingling around with other coins - proof or unc?! jack jeckel - you suggested unc over proof so I take it you're less pleased with how the '86 Ellis Island is looking (since that is indeed a proof). yotie - do you mean one of the two Franklin commemoratives from 2006 ('Scientist' or 'Founding Father')? Can you post pics? I think that 2006 scientist is one of the best modern commemorative designs!
