Well this is one of the cases where I would like to repeat the old adage, Buy the Coin not the holder.

This coin sat in an older graded NGC MS-64 holder. 1889 O Morgan dollars are not well known for a hammered strike. This coin has full breast feathers and full hair over the ear. This feature on an 1888 O 1889 O and 1891 O are seldom seen, and are indicative of a "full strike". Many MS-65 coins in all three years do not have this type of strike yet are still seen as MS-65 coins if the carry very good luster and with minor PMD.

This coin is currently at PCGS as a Raw coin, as I have no question of it being re-holdered in its old grade. Based on the 12 1889 O coins I have looked over in PCGS MS-65 this coin has a better than 50/50 shot of MS-65'ing. Should it MS-64 it still is a very solid fully struck MS-64. The Moral of this story is Buy the Coin, every grader has off days and makes mistakes.

Very little chatter, clean cheek, unbroken luster, strong strike. Obviously at least a 64 and I think you may be right in getting this to 65. The hits on the reverse on the breast are about the only dings I see that might carry it back to 64, but I think you do have at least a 50/50 shot.

Nice Russ! I hope you get the 65. Here's my 89o. I bought a full set minus only 5 keys/semi-keys for $3400 so at an average of $40 per coin that's what I paid for this one :)

I thought the cheek gouge might details it or 63 it at best but nope. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least...

I could see this graded 65. 64 would be a bit of an insult.

When I saw it was you posting an 1889-O I immediately assumed I was looking at an BER clash. Would have been quite the top pop.

I bought it for 125 under Grey sheet MS-64 bid, so I did OK. Like I say often "Buy the Coin" Not the holder!

Still a very beautiful coin Russ, and one you don't see well-struck often. I think you very well- congrats.
