Just Curious..... What causes laminations? Why do we not see them on newer coins? What did the mint do to solve this "problem"? What year did the mint solve the "problem"? Are they like mint marks where we won't see any after 1989? Are there any particular years that are known for having lots of laminations?

Thanks for the lamination education!

I've never heard it mentioned before, but I feel the solid copper/silver planchets may have had a start on the stock material. I feel the upset process to for the rim may loosen the lamination and some fall off before the strike and some after the strike often during circulation. The zinc planchets are not a mixture so they wouldn't have an issue of bonding. With the lack of full Silver planchets lessen since 1965 with the clad planchets, there doesn't seem to be that much of an issue that often on them. They do have a few examples of missing cladding on these. But this may be more of an issue on the stock material, rather than falling off the cladded coins.

I don't believe the mint has solved laminations, being that I don't think there is a way to solve them. (unless all coins are switched to plated coins, or solid one type of metal) Mint marks are present on coins after 1989. Phili mint removed the MM on pennies only, but Denver and S mint marks are still available. On nickels 1942-1945 nickels are known to have lots of lamination issues, however they do occur otherwise as well. On pennies dates below 1982 have lamination issues, as coop said: the zinc planchets are not a mixture
