Hello Everyone! I have been reading through the forums and recently decided to join! Seems like a great Canadian resource!

I emptied out my change jar the other day and spotted this strange color 1953 penny. Its NSF with just hardly viable doubling on 953. Feedback would be appreciated!

crappy scan! Just waiting for my microscope cam!

From my perception it looks more like a delamination situation. But weren't your one cent coins a solid bronze/brass composition at that time? I looked it up and that was the first year of QE2 on the obverse but the composition stayed at 98% Copper, .5% Tin, 1.5% Zinc (bronze), so I don't know why the top layer would peel off.

BTW, I have to ask, what microscope+camera did you buy?

That's pretty much the same as the one I bought a few months ago. I hope you have better luck with yours than I did with mine. I had problems with the integrated LEDs being reflected back into the "camera". Depth of field was also an issue with me. I couldn't get both the field and he devices of the coin in focus at the same time.

Please do let me know what sort of results you get and for what exactly you a using it. Maybe I expected too much from a $30 microcam. I'm still looking for alternatives.

Someone plated it after it left the mint.

High school lab nickel plating experiment.
The unplated area was where it was held whilst being immersed in the plating solution.
