Hi guys, I'd like to hear your thoughts on this Bust dollar. It's a bit outside my wheelhouse for being able to judge quality/grade. Thanks!

This piece appears counterfeit at a glance. The color is not good and the wear is very uneven. It could be a combo of an uneven strike and poor lighting but I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling looking at it.
Can you take it out of the flip and take hi-res images of both sides under bright light?

If it's a counterfeit it's a very deceptive one, a close match for 1802 Narrow Date examples on Heritage. I'd call it VG-8 and as for all early dollars certification should be mandatory before a purchase.

This has a G-06 obverse and a VG-08 reverse, so it's tough to tell which one a TPG would go with. I don't see anything that would indicate a fake, but as has been mentioned, when buying one of these it's almost insane to purchase it without having certification. It has been cleaned long ago and is starting to retone, but it is doubtful it would get a details grade as it was not mechanical cleaning. I see nothing else that might give it a details grade. But all in all, certification is a must do on this one.

The obverse rim is a big red flag to me. The patina also matches most of the Chinese fakes. My gut feel is that it is counterfeit. If you own it, send it to a TPG to see if it is legit.

I thought about it being a fake but it doesn't look like others I have seen, although I suppose it could be one. Agree with everyone who says getting it slabbed by a reputable TPG is imperative, especially when dealing with a valuable coin such as this one.

I appreciate everybody's insights on this coin. I have been questioning about sending it in, but wanted to see if it was worthwhile.
I had looked over the known/common counterfeit types and don't think it fit any of the descriptions, but its hard to tell.
It does have nice edge lettering, which I think is a good sign. Is that something that is commonly found on fake ones?

I didn't like it at first glance, either.

Also look at the raised rim from 10:00 to 3:00 on the obverse. That shouldn't be like that.

I guess that definitively settles it as a fake.

Both reverses are identical. Good catch Typecoin.

every time I see the new users posting a 19th century early date or a key date to any series and I find a look-a-like on the-site-we-do-not-talk-about, well, fake is all I can think of. I would say just look at these and you can tell for yourself http://coins.ha.com/c/search-result...Grade-102615

Could you weigh it? Then we'll know for sure.
