This is another one of the coins or coin like objects I have not been able to identify. Thanks for the help in advance! Edited by Ninji Digger 01/20/2016 01:27 am

its hard to see it in the 2x2. Can you take new pictures without the 2x2?

That's what I am thinking, but the characters seem very off. If you notice, the inscriptions on both coins are the same, but the characters are completely different. Does not look like a modern counterfeit, and I don't know why they would counterfeit this in contemporary times. Very curious.

I have tried to compare it to that exact photo and it doesn't match up perfectly. There the inscriptions are different or they sure look that way to me.

I agree with Petrus. From the square head tong Hartill 22.1424 seems most likely.
As for counterfeiting, contemporary counterfeits do exist but mint officials also skimped on materials to make more of a profit. Similar coins were also make in Vietnam and Indonesia, but I don't know if there are any recorded with this design.

I doubt it is officially cast. The characters, especially the top character "guang," are too wrong. Note how angular it looks in Petrus' picture, and how the points are long and drawn out in the OP's coin.

I agree with you Typecoin on the characters being different, but if it was not officially cast then what would it be called? I highly doubt it is a counterfeit considering I found it metal detecting on an old property from the 1700's at about 8" under the ground. To have an understanding as to what it reads and the time period would make this a lot easier.

It could be a private issue, a contemporary counterfeit, a charm, or an imitation from other oriental countries.

What words does it read and the time period?
