I tried that one out on my co-workers, none of them got it. I had to flee the room after I told them the answer- they were trying to throw things at me! You should've seen the looks they were giving me- priceless!! Even after I gave the answer one of my denser co-workers was still insisting that there was some "old coin that doesn't exist anymore" that you could use... Sheesh! Rachel [:p]

That's the beauty of it. The more numismatic knowledge the person that you ask has, the more fun it is. They tend to get all analytic on ya!

Old money story See if the kids can figure this one out
Three men go into a motel. The desk clerk said the room was $30, so each man paid $10 and went to the room. A while later, the desk clerk realized the room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to the three guys' room with $5. On the way, the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split $5 evenly between three men, so he gave each man $1 and kept the other $2 for himself.
This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27. Add to that the $2 the bellboy kept and the total is $29. Where is the other dollar? (No it is not in my collection)

You should subtract the $2, not add it, and that represents the $25 charge for the room. $27 (paid by three men) - $2 (kept by bellboy) = $25 (room charge)

Initially, each man paid $10 each = $30.
In reality, each man only paid $8.33 (one paid $8.34) for the room = $25.
Which means that each man was entitled to $1.67 in change (except for one at $1.66) = 5.00
As they each only received $1 = $3
That left $2 (.67+.67+.66) for the bellhop.

I think the Bellhop was overpaid. Taking a tip without asking... shame on him.

How do you tell when sour cream goes bad? How do you throw out a trash can? Why does the Department of Interior deal with everthing on the outside? Why do you drive on a parkway, and park on a driveway? Why do you ask for a hot cup of coffee? Why do you care if the cup's hot? Why do they call it a near-miss? If you nearly-missed it, that means you hit it doesn't it?
