Picking up a couple boxes of nickels along with two boxes of cents this week!

(Sorry for smiley overload just really excited!)
I have only done nickels twice before.
I know the big things: Canadians, War Nickels, 09's, Buffaloes, Proofs, & Glaring Errors.
But I also want to know the lower mintages(Other than the '50D, '38D & S, '39D & S, & the '55 and common(er) varieties.
Anyone got a list or know there off the top of their head?
Thanks!

You pretty much listed the key dates via low mintage....I keep all pre 1960 nickels for now some other dates with low mintages are 49s, 51s, 50p are all under 10 million mintage. Don't be surprised to find a V nickel I have found 2 in like 4 boxes searched. Have fun. I recently did two boxes to fill the entire set from. 38- now.....minus buying the 50d, 38s, 39s and d.

Coin Kid,

I echo much of what omega said. There are a number of varieties that you can look for. Visit Variety Vista and look up the CONECA listings for these. Review by date/mm and determine what interests you. Here's what I look for

All Buffalo/V Nickels

Jeffersons
I normally save all low mintage nickels (around 10M or less) unless the specimen is heavily damaged/worn
I save a few other dates/MMs (e.g. war, 1942D or where I'm trying to complete a roll for the date/mm)
I normally save all high grade specimens 1938-2016 with a more discriminating eye for anything over 1990
I normally save AU or better 1982/1983 (3+ steps showing, very few dings/dents/scratches); use the Red Book to identify other more recent dates/mm's worth culling out)
All variety coins and significant error coins

Out of a box, I may keep 5-15 coins. The rest go back into circulation (which include many 1939-1963 specimens). With nickels, saving every pre-1960 find could become overwhelming but to each their own. I don't judge. However, given most nickels aren't overly valuable, I would rather just roll them up and hope for a better one next time.

And good luck!! Hopefully you'll find something fun and interesting!

Keep an eye out for 1958-P. They are a lot more scarce than one might think.

1941-S large S is another one that could use a little more love, and was not listed in any of the red books I own.
