Coin Kid,
I echo much of what omega said. There are a number of varieties that you can look for. Visit Variety Vista and look up the CONECA listings for these. Review by date/mm and determine what interests you. Here's what I look for
All Buffalo/V Nickels
Jeffersons
I normally save all low mintage nickels (around 10M or less) unless the specimen is heavily damaged/worn
I save a few other dates/MMs (e.g. war, 1942D or where I'm trying to complete a roll for the date/mm)
I normally save all high grade specimens 1938-2016 with a more discriminating eye for anything over 1990
I normally save AU or better 1982/1983 (3+ steps showing, very few dings/dents/scratches); use the Red Book to identify other more recent dates/mm's worth culling out)
All variety coins and significant error coins
Out of a box, I may keep 5-15 coins. The rest go back into circulation (which include many 1939-1963 specimens). With nickels, saving every pre-1960 find could become overwhelming but to each their own. I don't judge. However, given most nickels aren't overly valuable, I would rather just roll them up and hope for a better one next time.
And good luck!! Hopefully you'll find something fun and interesting!
