So I am thinking about trying to pick up a key date Peace dollar in a slab. The 1934-S comes to mind right away. My budget will really only allow for an AU coin. I see the price guide shows almost $2000 for a MS60 (PCGS). I simply don't have that kind of money to spend. Is it even worth it to buy an AU slabbed coin in this date or is MS really where the value is? Is this a smart coin to buy or is there a good chance the value will tank over time? After all 1934 is old, but not that old. It's still possible that someones hoard could surface and hurt the value of the coin. Would it be a better idea to try and pick up a 1928 in MS condition? After all it's much more affordable but seems pretty readily available so I'm not sure it's "rare" even though the mintage is low.

I was thinking something like this might be nice for the 1934-S (this one is too expensive though, BV is only $700).

Opinions? Anyone have a nice 1934-S?

The 1934-S Peace dollar is indeed the key date for the entire 24 coin series in MS grade through MS64.

There are a few condition rarities that take over at MS65 ... but for most of us the 1934-S is indeed the toughest MS coin.

The AU55 example you are showing on ebay is IMHO way overpriced ... it is a coin that will likely never gain much attention when you are ready to sell.

If you are truly interested in the Peace dollar series ... and willing to make the investment ... then I politely suggest you select the best MS example you can of this coin and hold onto it.

You say your budget will not allow for it ... I get that ... then move on and select something else. The 1934-S in MS is a coin that has continued to appreciate over time as demand exceeds supply.

1934-S Peace dollar - PCGS MS64/CAC

1934-S-Peace-Dollar?--Risky-Investment?

Purchased over 5 years ago at full retail price ($4200) ... check the current ebay sold prices for this coin and I was indeed a winner.

Bottom line IMHO ... 1934-S Peace dollars are common at MS61 and below ... if you are looking towards an investment key date then you need to be at MS64 or better.

This is where we must decide if we are just collectors or investors. If you are an investor I think there are better places to put your money unless you are prepared to wait 20-30 years. I bet a 1934-S Peace dollar in MS65 will appreciate, but at what rate? The prices of coins do go down sometimes.

Beautiful coin nickelsearcher! Sounds like you did just fine with the price you paid on that. I see your point about purchasing at the high MS grade over just an AU. The AU may be fine if I just wanted to complete a collection, but for a true rarity the high MS is a better choice.

I think terry makes a good point. I would say I'm much more of a collector but I like to think the coins I buy will remain at their current value or go up. This can sometimes cause me to buy things I shouldn't. My main point was I don't want to go spend, let's say $5000 on the coin and in the next 10 years its only worth $1000 because more 1934-S coins were found.

It's up to you. I've seen some nice AU Peace dollars with good eye appeal and a strong strike. I've seen doggy looking MS65 Peace dollars with milk spots and also vice versa. Buy the coin, not the slab. No way can I ever afford a 1934-S in MS65. I'm not too proud to say I would patiently look high and low for the best looking coin in a lower grade for a budget price.

What is your budget?

What are your collector goals (investor or collector)?
