I purchased a 1908 $5 indian half eagle, rated ms-65 by GEC. I had never heard of GEC until I purchased the coin. I am now, admittedly to late, finding out that whoever GEC is, isn't to be trusted? I would appreciate any comments about my purchase.

You only got ripped off if you believed their "grade" and paid the price accordingly. I bought 2 different Morgan dollars on ebay that GEC had "graded" MS67. I didn't believe it and paid a price about right for MS60 coins. I later sent both to Anacs. One came back AU55. The other came back AU58-cleaned. Ahh well. At least I wasn't too surprised.

Well, the first hint should be when a coin that's worth $18,000 in MS65 goes for $750.....

Yes, you got ripped off. On the bright side, though, you got what looks like a high-AU coin at worst, so chances are you paid less than twice what you should have. I know this won't make you feel better, but that's a lot smaller loss than some who have posted here in your position have suffered....

The seller, to his credit, posted pics of sufficient quality for a knowledgeable buyer to form proper conclusions about grade. So, the takeaway from this lesson is to know the coin before you buy the coin.

I believe this coin would slab at AU55-58 from a reputable grader. It's gold, and it's going to appreciate over time. So, keep it for a period of years both as a reminder to do due diligence in the future, and to wait for prices to come to you. I think they eventually will, and you won't end up getting killed on it.

You only got ripped off if you paid for it.

The listing is in violation of ebay rules because it refers to the coin as 'certified.' According to ebay that is a raw coin and should have been referenced as such. You have a very valid complaint to take up with ebay if you have or haven't already paid for the coin.

Otherwise, yes, you let yourself get ripped off. Badly.

I want to thank all of you for your help. I am just learning and I appreciate the help. I have sent the seller a note requesting a cancellation of my purchase. If no luck, I will follow up with ebay. I wish I had found your forum before I made this purchase. I will be reading as much as I can on this forum!

Thank you!

Jim
