Hey everyone just picked this seated half up for 30$ at silvertown. Seemed like a great deal to me was wondering what you would grade this is I was thinking fine 12- fine 15. Thanks for the help. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

It doesn't have any file marks though, the side looks good. It weighs 10.83 grams but I think that's right on considering the wear it's suppose to be 12 grams. It's a lil smaller then my 1878 seated half, did they change size?

I would call it a VG-10, not all of the letters in LIBERTY are clearly visible and the rim isn't complete (whether that is from filing or from wear)

Even at VG-10 $30 is a good deal....

Don't know about filed edges but the denticles do seem unusually narrow on both sides. That could be caused by grinding the edges in which case the reeding should be gone. Detail otherwise looks F-12 or 15. Color is a bit dark but surfaces could still be original. $30 for an original Seated half in Fine seems like a good deal.

I have NEVER seen rims that thin on a SLH. And a weight discrepancy of 1.2g seems WAY too much even for this grade.
The file marks could have worn down over the 100 years since it was filed to scrounge up some silver. Is there still reeding? Can you take a quick picture of the edge?

And I agree there is something going on with the denticles. I've never seen one like this either.

Ha! Someone filed the silver off the edge and was audacious enough to put "reeding" back on the edge so that no one noticed. Very cool piece of history you have there!

That's probably correct. Interesting coin but definitely not right.

It's a lil smaller then my 1878 seated half, did they change size? No size change. If it only weighs 10.83 grams you have a problem coin for sure. Nominal weight is 12.40 grams for this date/series. That weight is far below any allowable tolerance and could only occur if the coin was worn completely slick (below PO1 even). Return it. It's not worth $30. Edited to correct nominal weight to 12.4 grams.

@ Justinwd
Your PM is turned off. If you can get Silvertowne to give you a 50% refund (fat chance!), I'll glady buy it from you. I think it's cool. I've never seen one like this.

How do I turn the pm on? Silver town offered to buy it back for 25$, haven't decided if I'm gonna sell it yet, it's only 30$, and it's different but if do I'll give you first dibs tycoon. Although I don't think I'm allowed to sell until 250 posts.
