Source: https://firstcoincompany.com/S/cana...edition-4-ozAnybody know anything about this? It doesn't appear to have been minted by RCM and the obverse is missing "D G REGINA". But as it bears a $5 f/v it can't be considered a medallion. I could be wrong, but I think for these reasons coins very similar have been reported as counterfeit on ebay. First Coin Company........? Or does RCM sell mint rights to others on occasion and if so, who? Edited by wildflowerAB 01/23/2016 10:31 am

Sort of, except for under the queen's head is bears the denomination of $5.00.
Do bullion maple leafs bear a $5.00 denomination?

John you're right. So a third party must be buying the maple leaves, then gold plating and producing these sets? Wonder what the Certficate of Authenticity reads.

Another variation, similar but different. https://firstcoincompany.com/S/cana...ologram-4-ozI had no idea there was an industry in colouring up maple leaves. I have visions of Asian and American tourists who visit Banff going home with a set, snuggly packed alongside a little fuzzy toy bear wearing a RCMP uniform plus a small bottle of maple syrup. Learn something new every day! Perhaps that's the reason why RCM has launched their own designs of various painted coin.

Wildflower, how come You so professional with circulation coins, had now interest ever in our SML? But it's ok, everyone have each own field. So the similar sets are on the market for years... I remember even older edition, I think 2011. The COA usually never says where and by which entity the coins have been enhanced. Sometimes it will say "struck by RCM" (which is truth). You so right about the tourists and the popular souvenirs. I am for 15 years have (and use) the key chain from Paris with Eiffel Tower, but it proudly has "Made in France", it already red (bronze?) cause the shiny white layer gone.

I'd be what's known as "a jack of all trades, master of none!" Seriously, my collection contains both. As I've never sold any of it, I become more careful at what I buy. There's a significant overlap between circulation coin minted by RCM and NCLT coin minted by RCM so often the two types of collections compliment one another. Another similarity is the historical element of NCLT, where in my opinion they serve the most valid purpose because as Canadians in general, we seem to place low value on learning about past events.

Funny thing is the RCM probably never granted permission for these types of enhancements, yet they are openly sold.

Four SML's are about $80, less if you buy in bulk. Enhancements = $5.00 paint and gold plating. Charge $249 for the set, mark it down to $200, $135.00 profit. Likely less with labour, packaging. But you see how they can make a dollar. Less milk spots on coloured plated coins. But the cost of 4 ounces of silver is high. Not enough value added for me. Anyone can print up a COA. Here is a Jigsaw Puzzle SML, not as originally sold but some may like it.

These coins are colorized and gold plated by 3rd parties. The Coin Shoppe have a lots of these coins - Canadian, American, and international. To me these coins are not official coins and I would never buy them. You will never see them in the Charlton catalog. Although some sold for good money like the Burning Maple: http://www.thecoinshoppe.ca/2015-1-...nium-finish/What is stopping these 3rd parties making more of them? Nothing.

Resale market is hit or miss. the burning maple sold for 90 bucks and could resell for 300...so that's a win. Im also not a fan of these 3rd party enhanced coins...there is just way to many of them....the themes never end...
Space themes, animals, holograms, gold plating, football teams, provinces, states...etc....If I remember correctly there once was a scratch and sniff seasons maple leaf hahahah!!

As an official mint distributor Gatewest does not carry these types of items. Although many of them look pretty neat my personal opinion is they are ized versions of the original. I leave it to the customers opinion as they ultimately make the decision as to purchase or not.

I like the original colored wildlife set. However, its gotten out of hand the amount of enhanced bullion out there. It would be a very expensive pursuit to have a complete collection. Also very risky, as the queen can develop milk spots. This is why I stopped buying them. There are some cool designs and a few are very well done. However, its just gone crazy with the amounts produced!!
