I bought these out of the LCS silver bin.

At first I thought, very high looking last 4, or wide
date. Then I looked closer at the last 4. On the
horizontal bar was a hint of doubling. Nice cloudy day
and parked in front of the big window I said that's a
4/4. Now I say R445r. It is too worn to see the tool
marks I suspect.

It looks like a bit of mortar set on this coin all over
the legends, maybe just a deteriorated die. For this one
I figured wide date pointed 5 until I looked at the 5
closely. Doubling at the bottom of the loop in the 5 and
tail. I do see tool marks all around the date area.
Maybe R446g.

pginrh can set us straight.

Here are my guesstimates.....

1944 - The coin is so worn that you didn't give much to work with, but there are just enough clues. For the last two date digits the positioning agrees both spacing wise, vertical wise and the relationship to the hoof, and the shadow of the 4/4 under the bar of the 4. I believe that it is indeed an R445r as you surmised and is as illustrated in the middle of Charltons 68th on page 306 in the middle picture.

1945 - A bit easier. The biggest clue is the blob (if that is a coin term?) at the tip of the top bar of the 5 in the date (I have only seen one die with that characteristic. It is also a round-back 9, narrow date (space to hoof), pointed 5 and a little nipple on the tail of the 5. See Charltons 68th Page 311, middle picture.it is not R446g.

Paul, it's the 2014 Charlton that you're referring to?

I ordered a copy just before New Years from Colonial Acres......supposed to arrive next week, patiently awaiting.

Yep Wildflower, it is the 2014 68th edition with the George VI 50c Varety section.

Silverdon, not sure what the blob is: an incipient die chip? or just something left from the finishing of the die?.
J446h per Charltons.

Narrow Date, excellent. Can't wait to get the 2014 Carlton.

Cheers pginrh. There are many tool marks
evident on the 1945, especially around the maple leaves in
the crest, near the date and the hoof ring area.

Oh my goodness, yes indeed, the 2014 Charlton and its special section on George VI fifty cent varieties is a MUST HAVE reference for anyone who chooses to pursue this particular collection.

I've mulled over a few 1943's for days and days now, it might be this or it might be that, yes, no, grrrr. A high or low 3 as opposed to a wide or narrow date? Now I have five whole pages of photographs to compare to.

This edition also gives Special Mention to our very own forum 50c guruguy - pginrh who so helpfully shares his amazing expertise here. As soon as the sun shines so I can snap better macro photos on my windowsill, I'm looking forward to continuing on and will post more pics of the more interesting (or perplexing) examples.

SilverDon, I'm glad to share this pursuit!

WildflowerAB, I'm glad your Charltons arrived. Charlton's 2014 68th Edition does not have all the varieties that you can find for the George VI 50c series. The listing that you have has all that I know of.

I have all in the listings (except one that was recently found on the Coins and Canada Website 50c forum)so I can compare most of the pictures that you post to be able to tell you what you have.

Happy hunting.... glad to see another 50c collector and maybe some new varieties.

Thanks pg! I like a challenge and obviously you do too!

Hoping tomorrow is a good photo day! I had already taken many but wasn't at all pleased with the results. Then I noticed the dial settings on my camera were totally askew, I'm ready to try again.
