Hi! I'm new here, I would have a question for you. I've got some pictures about a coin which is a Pillar 1732,F,8. I don't know much about these, my neighbour asked me to post a question so you can give him an idea whether it's genuine or not. What do you think? On this same page I saw another post about the same coin but it was "MF" and not only "F" like this one is. If you think it's fake, would you also tell me the reason why you think it is so? Here are the pics: Edited by Atix 01/25/2016 12:30 pm

This is reproduction, a souvenir or commemorative medal of a rare dated 8 reales coin, probably not made to fool collectors, but still not the original.

The coin is a replica because it is not very deceptive to someone who collects 8 Reales. However, once it is in the hands of someone who is uncertain of originality and it appears for sale on ebay or elsewhere it serves the same role as a "numismatic forgery". This is exactly why replicas are supposed to be conspicuously marked with the word COPY under US law. Here it appears that copy may be inscribed on the edge - but that does not comply with current law. It may be a somewhat older replica 1974 or earlier, which was before the law was in place. The statute stated a date of commencement and was silent on existing replicas, so it may not require the same warning. There is a general principle in US law that retroactive statutes must be very specific in the enabling language.

So you're sure it's not real? How do you know, is the color different, the edge or something?

Atix - When I was an authenticating consultant for ebay we must have terminated 50 auctions that involved this identical replica. It is a very common type.

Are those hallmarks on the edge? Is it a Franklin Mint replica, or an older British-made replica?
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Ok, thanks a lot for your answers! :) I have no idea what replica it is :D but I compared them and you're right there are small differences, I can see them. My neighbour was very confident that it's real, as I know he paid a high amount(as he said 1000€) for it, I don't know if it's true but if it is I have to say he's stupid. He isn't even an expert or anything.

1000 euros? Wow, the counterfeiter had just made his monthly salary from selling just a single coin!

I told him what you said but he still believes in that coin :))
Do you have information about the original coin's weight and length? That should convince him if it doesn't match.
