I have a number of Proof and specimen coins.
some come directly from the Mint.

As these coins are usually in a capsule-
(How else could they be protected)

How do I view or show or transport these coins to prevent wear against the capsule?

Is this something that can be done or in the "Wonderful World of Grading"

do the hairline marks or abrasions that are caused by contact between the capsule and the coin overlooked?

And is you collect US coins and use their grading system, would the marks cause by storage in a capsule cause the grade to be less than an MS 70?

Eagle mounts may work best; they certainly will not damage the surfaces of the coin. Any marks at all on the surface of the coin will of course dramatically lower the coin's grade. Just grade the proofs the same way you grade the circulation issues.

I'm confused Richard. What do you want to know? Will scratches from a mint holder lower the grade of the coin? If that is the question, I would say yes, without a doubt. I don't think it really matters how the marks got there. If they're there, it's distracting and will affect grade. My opinion of course.

If you want to take these to shows and such and they are moving around in these things that much, find a better holder I guess.

I think I had a coin or two in the old PCGS rattler holders, and I don't recall those holders putting marks on the coins though...

Hi RG

I use airtites ,,for the most part I use the ones with rings in them for the larger heavier coins the rings prevent any movement at all inside the holder .

album rub is something that is seen from time to time on the US coins ,,especially those from older collections , and sometimes even drawer rub some of the older collections were kept in drawers ,,it will be most notable on the reverse of the coins ,,but keep in mind that dusting of the obverse was also something that used to be acceptable .

in my opinion whether the wear is from circulation of from rubbing the coin or from the coin rubbing on the pages of a folder,or inside a holder or packaging ,it still affects the coin in a negative way .

By the way the mint cello that was used to package the proof coins for many years can and will scratch the coins .

proofs have a different grading standard due to the things that will affect them that would be unnotable on the surfaces of a circulation coin ,,with the mirrored fields and sometimes frosted devices any disturbance to these areas will effectually lower the eye appeal and grade .
