Hi all-
So I recently decided that I am going to buy myself a really nice coin the day I decide for sure where I am going to college. Unfortunately, my first choice for school (the Naval Academy) doesn't release admissions info till March, but it's never too early to start thinking! My budget will be around $150-200ish, and I want something that is either high grade, good date, or historically significant. Any suggestions?

Since you're considering the Naval Academy, how about buying a commemorative half that bears a ship? You might choose from an 1892/3 Columbian Half, a 1920 Pilgrim Half or say a 1935 Hudson Half. If you intend it to be a keeper, I'd also suggest getting one that's certified.

Ship ahoy!

I agree with ExoGuy. Classic commemoratives are awesome!
Rest in Peace

If you want low mintage +
Early US +
EF or AU grade+
Unusual denomination+
A great history

And stay in the $150-$200 range

Buy a Classic or Braided Hair Half Cent

Many with montages less than 100,000
You could even find one with LESS than 50,000 mintage and still meet all these criteria.

1924 Huguenot, 1936 long Island and 2000 lief Ericson also are ship commems. The Hudson will probably be out of his price range.

historical significance in numismatics could be certain date designations within a series. If you want significance by year based on an event in this country's history than it all depends on what blows you hair back.

Numismatics include an 1829 Half Dime. It was the first issue in decades of that series. Any 1853 Half Dime, dime, quarter, half dollar or dollar. It centers around a shift in American policy regarding its coinage. 1860 to 1865 coins are Civil War relevant. An 1828 Bust Dime. they changed the diameter that year of the series. The list goes on.

the options are wide open for you.

You can get great story value on a GSA hoard Carson City Morgan dollar for about $200.(For a more common date.)
I've been wishing for one of those for a long time now.

If it's the United States Naval Academy you're talking about perhaps get a coin from 1845 which is the year it was established

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unite...aval_Academy

There's some nice options from that year.

You could get a nice looking proof Liberty head "V" nickel certified in PF-64 or higher for around $175, so i'd sugest buying one of those. Kind of like the coin in my avatar, but higher grade (mines only PR-61)

I love the ship on the pilgrim half. Great choice in the naval academy, I was an enlisted navy man myself.
