One of my favorite varieties to look for in quarters is the small bust 1985-P. There is a much greater distance between the E of LIBERTY and Washington than on the typical '85-P. This one is tough enough to be fun to watch for and easy enough to actually find some. About 1.5% of circulating '85-P's are sm bust. These are nearly impossible in unc.

1981 and before are made of 95% copper and contain 2.5 cents worth of copper. during 1982 the mint switched over to copper plated zinc coins.

It's usually '82 and '83 quarters that people ask this about.

As part of Reagan's cost cutting measures mint sets were suspended in 1982. This wouldn't have mattered except it exposed something about the collectors of the day that very few knew; they weren't setting aside new coins. Even though there was only a tiny demand for these coins it was quickly realized that with no mint sets there was virtually no supply.

There are lots of great things about '81 quarters as well but they are not scarce in unc. This was the high water mark for mint set production and there are still lots of these floating around. In fact the '81 mint set is the only one to contain the type "d" quarter reverse used on some of the quarters from '77- '84. It's the Philly and appears in about .6% of sets.

Obsolete and silver coins in circulation are in all cases coins that have been removed from circulation in the past and then, usually, inadvertantly returned to circulation. If this were not true then the Buffalo nickels, wheat cents and silver dimes we're finding now would have more wear than they did in 1964. They don't. They made billions of coins before 1965 and these often find their way back into pocket change after having spent decades in desk drawers or coin collections.

I've been hunting quarters for almost a year now. Perhaps my experience will be interesting to some?

After about 4,000 quarters I finisehd my non-state clad collection. That being the case I wouldn't say any were particularly hard to find. I found my first silver quarter in a roll (1960D) after about four boxes. At the 13,000 mark or so I completed my state collection (to date anyway).

In all I've searched 242,700 quarters. I started off slowly, but now I have two banks that save every roll the customers bring in for me and for some reasons they bring quarter rolls way more than the other denominations. They are fast to search so I always take them. In all I've found 39 silver Washingtons, 292 Canadians, and 86 other foreign coins (see below).

1937, 1939, 1944(2), 1947, 1950D, 1951, 1951D(2), 1951S, 1952D, 1954S, 1956, 1957(4), 1960D(2), 1961*, 1961D, 1962(5), 1964(9)*, 1964D(7)*

*includes one saved from a friend's cash register

I know that I'd have to live 100 years at today's find rate to get anything like a reasonably complete album, but finding a silver quarter in a roll is pure joy to me! I cherish all the ones in my album 10x more than any coin I've bought.

Good luck to all!

When I worked as a commercial bank teller in college, I would find a silver quarter in about every 3 or 4 boxes from weekly shipment. We got our coins from Brinks, they had the clear plastic wrappers and it would take me literally 3 minutes to scan an entire box of 50 rolls by just looking at the edges. The best luck I had was an old man turned a complete roll of 40 silver quarters, I never would have noticed, but the roll had 1957-1962 written on the outside, so naturally I had to look!

Not from roll-hunting, but my wife got a 1999-S Clad Proof Delaware SHQ in change at a grocery store last year!

It was in pretty decent shape and I suspect it had not been "out" long.
