Hi !
I am relatively new to the world of Banknote collecting. I searched many Websites in the Internet to get a better Impression on the whole market. This is also how I found your Website and I would like to hear your opinion about Banknote auctions in General.

I found one recent auction at sixbid.com: https://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?auction=2512 from a german auction house which seems to be a very big one with over 2900 world banknotes including many high value items and the Quality seems to be very high. I also found their offers on numisbids and delcampe. I did not find a comparable catalog in the net at the Moment or in the past.

What is your opinion about these ? Are there often offers like these and if yes, where can I find them ? Are there any bigger auctions I can find anywhere else ? What are your general experiences with auctionhouses (not ebay) ? The german aucion house also offers live Internet bidding which seems to be a very famous way for international bidders to take part in an auction. Do you have other auctions you would suggest ?
Thanks for your opinions !
Rest in Peace

Sorry to see you've had no responses on your very good questions.

For high end items I would recommend Heritage auctions. ebay if you know what you are doing and or are buying certified pieces.

Let me say I have no experience buying at auction (except for ebay I mainly buy from dealers, fairs and other collectors) but my mother has been trawling auction sites looking to buy small China cat figurines...

One site she uses http://www.the-saleroom.com has a list of catalogues of auction houses all over the UK and allows you to bid online. While specialist banknote auctions do appear there from time to time if you search "lots" it will usually throw up a few hundred banknotes which usually have conservative estimates (though I have not seen what they actually realise)

I wonder if it is possible to pick up a bargain or two there, especially when banknotes appear in general sales, possibly being overlooked by anyone with any inside knowledge.

If you do buy from this or the German auction house I would be interested in hearing how you get on.

; strap yourself in and enjoy the adventure.

Now, to your question. I would recommend:
1. Goeff Bell auctions -- New Brunswick; great deals, great notes; honest, standup folks, great service
2. Lyn Knight auctions -- honest, reputable; known him for over 30 years and bought many notes
3. Heritage auctions -- same comments as with Lyn Knight

ebay is okay but I usually shy away from non-North American sellers due to high shipping; but there are some who have reasonable rates. Personal recommendations if you wish, send me a PM.

Edit to add: I've inserted a link to another thread which will show some of my recent acquisitions from Heritage and Lyn Knight. Will have to dig around to find the thread for the Goeff Bell notes. Enjoy

SixBid is basically acting as a forwarder for your bids. Most (all) of the auction houses have their own web sites and will accept email or fax or telephonic bids. At least that way you know your bid was submitted.
