I found a 1868 Shield nickel with what appears to be significant die errors...specifically broken die. I sent the coin to NGC as a possible error. They returned it graded XF45 but with a comment the error wasn't a recognized error. Does that mean the coin is unique?

I've attached a photo and appreciate any and all comments about the coin.

to CCF. Can't tell for sure but it may be a retained Die Cud http://www.error-ref.com/anvil-die-retained-cud/

I also think it might be a Retained Cud. BJ Neff might want to add it to the http://cuds-on-coins.com/ website if it is. He's a member here at CCF too and may see this.

Thanks for your comments.. There are three separate areas of errors. The first is just left of the date moving to about 4:30. The second is what appears to be a Cud from 4:30 to 2:30 and the third is just above the " Cud to the "R" of TRUST.
Rest in Peace

Finding a Shield nickel without die cracks, die chips, Cuds, or die clash is the real challenge.

They simply were not familiar with minting those very hard planchets and the dies started cracking almost immediately.

I do not know your intent w/r/t these nickels but if you wish to collect them for resale you might want to check the CherryPickers Guide for photos and pricing of various varieties:
