Hey everyone! I have been a lurker for awhile, and joined tonight to comment on a post about a $2 1/2 gold. These coins are my main focus. I have found three 1911-D in the "wild" (purchased as 1911, turned out to be 1911-d weak d after getting graded). I wanted to share one of my favorite coins with you (that isn't a 1911-d). It was purchased raw on ebay, then I had it graded (MS62 with NGC). Toning like this is pretty rare on gold, and I love the colors! Hope you enjoy!

There are bright pinks, purples, and blues. It was hard to capture with the holder. The pictures with the reflection of the light show how the colors really pop.

Weird.
Gold normally doesn't tone, at least to that extent.
Wonder what it was exposed to.

I find that coin very .. Very interesting with lots of eye appeal

As others have said ... Don't see many toned gold coins.

Also ... Good to hear about you finding "weak D" 1911 D's
as 1911's. That is a hole I need to fill ... Someday.
I will be watching for one of those.

I believe when gold tones it is from the improperly mixed copper alloy in the plachet. The copper is what tones.

That is a beautiful gold Indian. Not sure if I have ever seen one quite like that.

Love it. I cannot say that I am not jealous.
Friendly note- read up some on getting good pictures through a slab. Everyone has trouble with that in the beginning.

I also look for $2 1/2 gold in older holders... if anyone has any let me know. PCGS, anacs, NGC, etc... Here is a rattler I have. Looks pretty good for the grade, too.

Are you sure the toning is natural? I have never seen gold tone like that.

That question comes up on every forum I post this coin on. I have seen 3-4 gold toned like this. Some people think they were kept in old leather pouches. Who knows. All were graded though, so the graders thought it was natural.
Rest in Peace

Lovely. Seriously rare toning, but it happens on a very few gold coins with poor copper mix.

It looks like frying pan or blowtorch work. I torched the $2-1/2 scrap jewelry coin I recently got on ebay. It toned, but not as dramatically. I can't get a decent photo to show the effect. It no longer looks shiny and polished.
