Counterfeit-1914-D-Lincoln-Cent---Altered-Date-?

Date appears to have been altered but spacing looks different then a 1944-d to 1914-d cent.

Looks like pre-1940, can't tell you which one though. Maybe 11D?

Seller maintains that the coin is legit since certified by Carl at National Coin Grading Service.

"On Feb-01-16 at 10:44:37 PST, seller added the following information:
DUE TO POTENTIAL BUYER EMAILS : ABOUT WHAT LOOKS LIKE TAMPERING ON SECOND 1 ON 1914D COIN ... IT IS NOT TAMPERING , IT WAS LOOKED UNDER MAGNIFICTION BY PROFESSIONAL GRADER AND DEEMED AN AUTHENTIC 1914D BY CARL AT NCGS. THEY CONSIDER ALL POSSIBLE SCENARIOS CONCERNING THE 1914D SINCE THEY ARE AT TIMES FAKES. THIS 1914D WAS DEEMED REAL AND AT WORST IS SLIGHT DAMAGE BY THE SECOND 1. IF YOU LOOK AT COINS UNDER MAGNIFICATION THEY WILL LOOK WORSE THAN THEY REALLY ARE. THIS IS A LEGIT 1914D."

Gone

Prior to it being gone, I emailed NCGS National Coin Grading Service to see if they offered a over grading or authenticity guarantee and if coin had post mint damage why it would not get a details rating. Reply below:

"The grade assigned to coins and its authenticity is our opinion only. We do not offer an overgrading or authenticity guarantee.
The idea of assigning 'Details' instead of a numeric grade was created by other grading companies and we do not assign the term EF details or AU details. etc. to any coins we grade. We believe all coins that are not copies or altered or heavily damaged should be assigned a grade from the Sheldon Scale. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Carl Mellick

This is NOT an altered 1944-D.

In a 1944 coin, the second 4 is much closer to the rim.

Agreed, it's not a 44 but looks to be possibly a damaged genuine coin. You can't use a 1924-d or 1934-d as they have the "VDB" on Lincoln's shoulder and this coin does not show that.
