My wife and I are going to an auction on Sat. They say they have a lot of old and rare money and coins.
I know silver dollars and what to look for in them...but What else should I be on the look out for? Particular coins....years? Any suggestions?

Honestly, just be on the lookout for auction mania taking hold.

The LCS I frequent has an auctioneer come in and pick up coins to add to all his auctions. Invariably these bin grade Morgan's go for way more than their value. Often they find their way back into the same LCS so they can sell their score. The LCS does offer fair prices, but these auction scores don't think so. He will then offer to sell them similar dollars from his bins at a price not too far north of his bid price. That is when they leave dejected.

Stick with what you know. If it is too good of deal, make sure it really is before you jump because for whatever reason none of the other bidders are jumping.

Be careful and have fun.

Let us know how it goes.

Rest in Peace

A simple rule is to buy what you know. Or learn first.

Definitly be aware of silver prices and general grade values for coins. I agree with buckeye. I see a lot of auctioneers picking up from my lcs too. It's better to pick them up from dealers a lot of times because some people ideas of prices are stuck in where the silver high was.

This auction is for the local VFW... not just coin auction...has a bunch of estate stuff donated to them.
So sounds like they are auctioning off collections they " inherited". Could have anything...just don't want to kick myself later for not picking up a coin that was really rare.

This is also in a really small town in Montana so not to many bidders. Could be some great deals.

Also be careful about some auctions because the auctioneers may not have more than a general knowledge of coins and some may be fake... Happened to me with a couple of large cents but was luckily able to get my money back. I agree with what others say.

Bring a Red Book and some pictures of authentic key date coins. Learn the diagnostics of the genuine coins.

If you get a bad gut feeling about a coin while you are looking at it, then don't even consider it. You may be picking up on it being cleaned or fake.

They should have a listing of the lots to be auctioned I would think.

See if you can get that list from the auctioneer / VFW and do some legwork before the auction.

Naturally look for bulk coins that have notes saying UNSEARSCHED.
