I don't know the shaped ones kinda jump out of the edge of nclt coins. I almost just view them to in my head as silver bars.

I'm in the same boat with most of these, although I do love that Mongolian owl coin. I very rarely find a coin that I will collect just for novelty factor, which is the only appeal of most of these.
My favorite unusual coin that I do collect is the Olbia dolphin, which was actually used in everyday commerce from about 500-200 BC.

I would simply rather spend my money on 'real' coins.

I do like the owl and Mongolian series but kinda because they fit more of the characteristics of a coin or round. Mainly I could see having it in my pocket as money.

The weird-shaped ones "from Somalia" aren't actually from Somalia. They're unofficially made by a private mint in America. So they're not even "coins" in the sense of being legal tender.

In particular, anything denominated in "Somalian dollars" is not a real coin, because the currency of Somalia is the Somalian shilling, not any kind of "dollar". Now, I have a few coins denominated in Somalian shillings (and one denominated in Somaliland shillings) that for all I know have never been anywhere near the Horn of Africa either. But at least they've got the right currency. |
