Does anyone know how many coins were sold on ebay last year, either dollar amounts or the actual number of coins sold? I need this info for an essay that I'm writing.

Thanks

Millions.

Not possible to know how many for sure, but a good guesstimate would be to take the average number of auctions ending in a 24 hour time frame and multiply that by 365.

That would give you the amount of coins listed, but how many actually sold?

What is the essay about?

Know? No I don't know, but a little research on your part would yield some information to allow an educated guess. I did a custom search on ebay in the Coins and Paper Money category. I searched for sold listings. Set the yield to 200 items per page. What I got was 38 pages of 200 items per page. But only items that ended about 7:30 PM today 2/4 and back to 11:00 PM on 2/3. (I rounded some of these numbers, so don't complain that your calculations are slightly different)

This gave me an average of about 370 items sold per hour, times 24 would be about 8,898 items sold in a 24 hour period, then times 365 gave me approximately 3,247,610 items sold in a year.

Now some variables are involved. Wednesday to Thursday are not peak volume sell times for ebay. If you did a search daily, at the same time, for a week, getting the last 24 hours of sales, your numbers should be much more accurate.

Other ideas on how the OP could research this?

I am writing an essay about how the internet has changed the Numismatic community. I'm writing this essay to try and win the ANA YN literary award this year.

I really appreciate all the responses so far. Thanks a ton everyone!
Rest in Peace

Penny Guy's suggestion might be as close as you can get.

I don't think there's any way to know for sure because of those ever popular "Unsearched" bags of wheaties. Are those sold by weight? How many other coins are sold in sets or rolls?

You could always try to get in touch with someone from the bay's public relations department and see if they can get you an answer from their data base. But that might not give you the number of coins sold -- just the number of transactions involving coins. Besides, they might not feel like sharing that information....

I don't think ebay would be very inclined to release that kind of info. I was really hoping to get a dollar amount on how many coins were sold last year (ex. they sold $XX.XX in 2015)

They may be more inclined to release the total percentage of coins and paper money sales. I could imagine them saying that "Coins and paper money listings accounted for ___% of all ebay transactions last year.

Doesn't Bobby have a contact who works for ebay? Maybe he could point me in the right direction?

Good luck with your essay.

Some thoughts for you if they help.

Internet has brought down the bid / ask spread on coins.

Internet has made coins easier to sell for collectors.

Internet has made specialized knowledge more widely accessible.

Internet has brought lots of disconnected collectors together, take this place for example.

Lots of good topics.

If you like writing, you can also enter my contest and win a free coin. 2 silver Ikes, 2 silver ancients, and an oddball US type coin sampler prizes at stake.

Plenty of topics to pick from.

Good luck.

According to this website, ebay sold $1.411 billion worth of coins and stamps in 2013. I'm not sure how accurate it is or if it is quite you are looking for.

If you have exhausted all possible online on print resources, you could always give ebay a call and tell them why you are looking for this information. Worst they can do is say no but you never know, they might be cooperative.

Good luck with your paper!

Unfortunately, about a third of that number were 1909-S VDB cents and 1916-D dimes.
