For Christmas my wife gave me a trip to visit the Denver mint. We now have our trip scheduled and we are making plans on what to do for the week we are there. The first thing we have on our list is the mint tour, we already have our reservation. We also plan to visit the ANA museum in Colorado Springs. I would like some input from my fellow CCF members about other things to do in the Denver area. I would like to have recommendations on good coin shops and good antique malls/stores to visit. I would also like recommendations on other things to do and visit there. I'm not into sports so a tour of Broncos stadium is of no interest to me.

Is it like the Napa Valley tour, where they give you free samples at the end ?

scstrawn,
Pikes Peak in the middle of winter? Is that possible or is there some sort of visitor area at the bottom?

The last issue of the Numismatist featured a many paged listing of all the places to visit and things to do when visiting. Call them and they would probably send you a copy, especially if you are visiting them.

Just don't throw anything into the bin that has the blanks in them. Someone on the ANA Summer Seminar tour a few years ago threw a Barber quarter into the bin, and now the ANA is not allowed to host tours during the Summer Seminar any more.

We do have our reservations for the tour. I'm so excited that the top of my head is ready to blow off. This is one of my major bucket list items.
We are also planning to visit the money museum in Colorado Springs, does anyone know what their gift shop is like? Also, do the LCS in Colorado charge sales tax for coin purchases? (Some states don't). What is the sales tax rate?

Quote: Pikes Peak in the middle of winter? Is that possible or is there some sort of visitor area at the bottom? The paved road to the summit is open year round, pending weather conditions(it does get plowed after snowfall). The cog railway(station is in Manitou Springs) is also available but only goes to 11,500ft in winter with a disembark opportunity for photos at 10,000ft before the return trip to Manitou. After your trip to the ANA museum, I would recommend a stop at Hallenbeck Coin Gallery which is only a couple blocks away.

From what I can find CO has no state sales tax on coins, but local communities may have tax on them. So it varies depending on where you are at in the state.

That's gong to be a fun trip! Denver itself is a wonderful city, and there are plenty of interesting towns (Boulder, Fort Collins, etc.) and sights within a couple hours drive. I have no doubt that you will enjoy yourself! Quote:Is it like the Napa Valley tour, where they give you free samples at the end ? Wouldn't that be nice? Oh wait, those tours are never free...and you always land in the gift shop at the end.

You will need to walk through the ANA giftshop to get in and out of the museum. They have a few shelves of various books for sale, a stand of supplies, postcards, bookmarks, and some various coin sets (I.e."birds on coins"). They also have some nicer coins in the counter, which are pretty much all foreign NIFC. They do have some US mint sets, but they're pretty marked up. They also have the national park quarters and some dollar coins. I think one of their more unique items is the periodic table of numismatics (not like the PCGS one) that is the actual elements with coin pictures when they can. Have fun on your trip!

Hallenbeck coin in colo springs is a good one. Tberes also rocky mtn coin in Denver thats good to. I think its called daves coin which is right next door to rm coin. So you might as well stop in. Depending on what you want to do and where you are theres tons of things to do and see. Garden of the gods and 7 falls are awesome in colorado springs. Yes even in winter. You might like a beer at union station they only serve local brews. Food wise there are litterally 100s of choices. Govs park in denver has the best fried pickles. The buckhorn exchange has exotic meats and foods from around the world. Yack and gazel are two I remember. they have the #1 liquor license in the state so they have been around a while. Pm me for other ideas if youd like.

There is a pretty nice aquarium in downtown Denver. I was impressed. Something different for the kids (if you have any). My kids enjoyed it and so did I.
