I know that even the best of these types is only worth a trivial amount of money but I'm trying to improve my knowledge about spotting fakes. A friend bought this on a recent trip to China. I know nothing about Chinese coins but after a short time on Google I came across Gary's excellent site, PrimalTrek, where I was able to find that it seems to be a Kang Xi era 1 cash tong bao coin. But... it seems very crude compared to other images I can find of "real" tong bao coins. The mint ideogram (for Beijing) and the Manchu ideogram on the reverse seem very thick and heavy compared to other images. I'm perfectly willing to accept that this is a fake...it seems there are tons of fakes for valuable Chinese coins, but would someone take the trouble to fake one of these relatively cheap coins?

thanks in advance for your help.

Bill

Bill,
These "fakes" are produced in large quantities for use as souvenirs, decorations, and feng shui purposes.

As an example, this Chinese website is selling kang xi tong bao coins just like yours for $1.52 each (RMB 10). If you buy in a quantity of 200 or more, they are only $0.38 each (RMB 2.50). The company also sells the red cord to string the coins on.

Gary,
Thanks for your quick and expert help. Yep, that's exactly my coin alright in the link you provided, right down to the details of the casting. I guess there's still money to be made in "making" money.

Thanks again,
Bill
