I think my love for toned coins came about only last year, when I opened the cases where these silver dollar had rested for over 40 years and much to my pleasure they'd become deeply toned. I removed them and put them in secure plastic capsules but now I'm wondering if that was the right thing to do because it seems the colours are not quite as vibrant as before. Or maybe it's my imagination.

So my question......Do toned coins stay toned to the same degree once they're out of the environment that resulted in toning (ie sulfer in cases). Maybe I should return them to their cases? Any insight into storage of toned coins in that regard would be greatly appreciated.

It's probally the back ground it was in with the case. Toning won't go away it will just progress left to its own devices. An air tight should arrest it. If it got darker it's possible.

If anything the toning seems lighter but you're right, it could have been the contrast with the lining in the case.

I might return them to their cases. It's my understanding if left too long eventually they'd tone to black, -- but I'm thinking that would require several more decades.
