I found this in a dealer's bin last month, and for the $0.25 US I figured I may as well. The reverse looks nice and lustrous-

1952-Nickel:-A-Shame,-Isn't-It?

Then I flip it over, and there's a huge rust spot. There's some on the edge as well.

The reverse picture looks stretched on my screen, I don't know if you guys are seeing it. I wasn't able to fix it.

I see it as an oval, too.

Yeah, shame about the rust.
The damage is irreversible.
An EF coin worth about fifty cents has been reduced to one tenth of its original value.
Be thankful it's not a corroded 1952 penny, you could have been faced with a twenty-five fold reduction in value.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

No- I wasn't aware there was a Canadian version. Although I didn't know the American one was happening until yesterday, either.

I've often wondered why would happen if you put it in CLR for a couple minutes and give it a gentle rub with a soft cloth. Would this damage the coin further? Or would it take the rust away.

CLR is basically acid. Not a good idea unless you want to end up with a damaged, pitted coin.
