So I've been a bank teller for a couple years now. Prior to that I worked in the main bank of a casino where I used to get coins daily (but that's another story). Now I typically get a few silvers a week searching rolls in my downtime. This is the best haul I've had at this job to date. On Friday a lady with a shoebox full of rolls walked in. I immediately dropped what I was doing and called her to my window. She had me deposit the money into her account so she could pay her taxes and I sent her on her way. Didn't find a single coin worth keeping in any quarter rolls, pennies, or nickels. Then I slid the dimes out of the first roll and saw 4 silvers. Long story short- 17 dime rolls produced 59 silvers! Whats weird is that 90% of them are 1947-1952.

It definitely helps me support my habit. My favorite is when the Salvation Army brings in buckets of coins during kettle season. The other tellers hate it so I get them every time!
Rest in Peace

Nice benefits. Also nice that your bank doesn't get cheesy about you exchanging coins.

Two decades ago my sister made a killing , working as a bank teller.

This story concerns the Australian $200 NCLT gold coin.
Under Australian Law, banks are legally obliged to accept NCLT coins at their face value, in observance of their NCLT legal status.

These coins were originally sold by the Mint at around the $300 mark, and at the time, had an AGV of about $150. Problem was, that the mint made far too many of them, to the extent that they lost collector value, that was compounded with a large drop in the gold price. Huge numbers of them were redeemed at their face value.
The bank had 13 of them, and could not decide what to do with them, so they just languished in the bank vault.
Later, with the rising gold price nearing $200 per coin, my sister decided to buy them all. She sold them to a coin dealer a few years later, (she needed the money) at $320 per coin.

Profit at the time of sale: 13 X $120 = $1,560 !

Current gold value for these coins in nearly AU$500 (U.S.$350) per coin.

stuff like this doesn't make me happy for you at all. it makes me feel sorry for the lady who probably could of used the money, and didn't know better. Part of being a coin person is teaching those who don't know. but jmo.

So was he supposed to open every roll and check for valuable coins while she waited?

Just because I work at a bank doesn't mean I'm rich. I have kids and a mortgage. I eat ramen noodles and hand in my rolled coins too. Like Steele said, people don't stick around and watch me count them.

Tellers are under a lot of pressure nowadays to sell banks services (fees). Upper management can be ruthless and cutthroat in their relentless push on tellers to sell. Teller turnover rate is high.
My wife was let go from one position because she refused to pound the pavement to sell bank services to businesses. Telling - not a job I would relish! So, a little silver bonus doensn't hurt -
