1952 Fifty Cent Varieties

Heh Wildflower. Thanks for starting these threads, great opportunity to learn about the 50 cent pieces! Now I have to check my coins for these variants.

Hounddog Bill you've given me an opportunity to illustrate the painsaking work that must go into documenting 50c varieties. Mind boggling actually.

I hope Paul doesn't mind me posting a photo of the respective reference to the 1952 dbl HP die page within his study. I don't think so because he's very gracious in sharing, if anyone's interested.

You can take anything that "pginrh" has to say about 50 cent pieces as gospel ... he is the guru on this great series. I'm sure that the "Paul" that's mentioned and referred to above is him and his extensive study. Charlton had to greatly greatly reduce his work for the 50 cent variety section in the back.

The 195 of the date is fixed and so for date positioning varieties, it all depends on the position that the 2 was imparted to the die. Since the last date '2' digit was manually entered into each die, and since there were 66 Reverse dies used per the Mint figures, there are 66 possible date configurations possible. Only the widest date, and narrowest date' arer illustrated in Charltons catalogues (unless you have the 68th edition where quite a few of the George VI 50c varieties are picturedl).
The coin in NewNumismatist's entry is one of the 'inbetween' configurations, neither the narrowest or widest, no repunched 2, the 2 at a height between highest and lowest positioning, and design visible between the 5 and 2. The question that remains is there any doubling of the 'HP' on the Obverse.
