I think this coin has some character, other might find it down right ugly. Happy to hear thoughts on that. Primarily interested if folks think it would likley be deemed "damaged", etc. by PCGS/NGC, as there is a fairly significant slice through the legend on the reverse at 2 o'clock. Could have already happened for all I know (i.e., crack-out).

good feedback, thanks. ok, I figured as much for such a significant "slice". Though I'd really like to understand better how to discern cleaning. I usually look for hairlines (esp. all running in the same direction), and/or unusually bright and tone-free surface, etc. Though this looks like maybe it was left for decades on a shelf in a factory, or who knows what, how to discern that this "look" is really the result of cleaning?! Thanks!

Ir might have been cleaned, possibly. But just steer clear of it.
Rest in Peace

If you want one in a TPG buy it in a TPG.

Actually, I don't necessarily want a slab. What I want is to develop the skill to discern both grade and originality. I want to have the ability to buy a raw coin and (potentially) slab it down the road if I want to sell. This seems a reasonably attainable goal by astutely studying Photograde, TPG'er results, and via discussion like this.

I'm not convinced it is necessary for the TPGs to "bless" a given coin with a grade for it to have value. It seems TPG'ing primarily benefits the seller, to substantiate value for potential buyers. And a "lazy" or less informed buyer can just buy a quick coin via TPG slab ("sight unseen") if they so choose. But raw coins require more study, and perhaps more appreciation, where the establishment of value depends on their detailed consideration.

Thoughts?
