I am confused by this coin (the last one I need to complete my small cent collection). Some places state there is just circulated and specimen types and others say there is also a PL version. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...nt-1953-1964I want to find a full red version of this coin and PL is what I usually try to find but I am having zero luck finding this coin in PL. Does it exist? Coinsandcanada says so but I am not sure. I am in China and don't have my Charlton.

It does exist, If you look at past ebay sales of the link you provided, one sold in PL65. If that is the last cent you need, someone on here may know where you could find one. I have 1500 1953 MS cents in bank rolls. I opened a few of them to look for a SF but stopped.

But this is where I get confused. https://www.jandm.com/script/getite...CID=5&PID=20According to J&M, PL sets started in 1954. As well, coinsandcanada also state PL sets started in 1954. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...ts=1954-1996I saw that PL-65 sale but I don't understand how a PL can be sold when nobody else advertises PL 1953 SF cents. I have full red from 1938 to 2012 and this last hole in my album is pissing me off. This coin in full red doesn't seem to exist or if it does, nobody has one for sale. I am also concerned that I have been searching incorrectly for it, since I have been searching for PL. Now I am not so sure.

Here is a past topic on a 53 PL set: https://goccf.com/t/105004Also, the Charlton starts listing PL sets in 1953. There may be more to this. I'm sure someone on here will know.

So it is still safe for me to search for a 1953 sf PL as well as MS, even though there seems to be some disparity in different reference sites?
I don't really care if the one I find is PL or MS. Just want full red.

CC and C is selling a 1953 red SF in this ICCS set: http://www.cdncoin.com/product-p/6195pl1953.htmIf you're interested, given an individual coin price is quoted, they might help you out. To add: there's also an "antique red beautiful" on ebay.ca that looks very much like a SF, although the seller does not indicate the variety.

Thanks. I found these sites as well in my searches. That ICCS one from CC and C I found before but I am in disagreement with ICCS depictions of red, which I have found before on coins for sale. I would never call that coin red and I have found others from them with similar colouration that to me were not red.
That "antique red beautiful" one looks nice but I know nothing about NNC grading and if they didn't even bother to add a major variety to their description, it smells funny as well.

Do not touch that NNC coin. They have a notorious reputation for overgrading.

I didn't think NCC was actually a grading company, could be wrong. But as is often said, buy the coin not the package.
The ICCS PL65, difficult to say how red it might be but you're right, red is not always red.
Adding a final suggestion. CCF has a buy/sell forum I believe? But I don't know how many posts are required in order to be eligible to access it. 100?

Well, that article is frustrating. I see lots of NSF in full red for sale but nothing in SF yet the article says that the NSF version is harder to find. I also so far have seen all the denominations for sale as well. Not hard to find yet this one seems to be impossible. The joy of the hunt.

@Tomswift Good luck in your quest for the PL I was on hunt for same type but ended up with a MS65 SF to complete my set a bit pricey but was happy to get it. My understanding was it would only be found in a PL set but ya never know, it sure seems to be elusive.

I would be happy with MS-63 and up if it is red but it seems hard to find. I just got an ebay notice finding the NSF in 64 and 65 full red for good prices. These I see all the time. SF? Never. The few that have come up were in no way red. The hunt continues.
