Silver dollar experts:

Does this seller's explanation hold water?

301872303090

"Experts in 1921 can detect 1921 "s" coins simply by looking at the front of the coin

A 1920 (sic) "S" coin has somewhat rounded edges is very flat and has a certain look to it that is distinctive and quite different from the Philadelphia and Denver strikes of the same year."

Tuff to tell from the pics but if it is a 9a the S should still slightly show. He has bad pics and is not showing the mm area or die markers... pass

Based on the seller's reasoning for calling it a VAM9A I highly doubt it is. I agree with all of Cascade's points.

You could always offer him $20. Of course, those photos are so poor even that might be a risk.

Can anyone tell a 1921 S just by looking at the obverse?

Not unless it has unique die markers to a specific 21s obverse die like the "Thorn head".

Funny you say that dave. That's exactly what I was thinking when I first read this thread as the only way to right off tell a 21s from obverse.

Yeah, that's like when you ask someone how much they want for something and they say $50 or $60. Well duh, you just think I'm gonna pull out 3 twenties. Reminds me that there are many stupid people out there every time I hear it
