So I went to the grocery store down the street to make my second Coinstar dump of the week. Went yesterday but the machine was full. Who keeps filling that dang machine anyway? Well it was up and running today so I got to do my routine. Only $75 in change this time. I dont remember keeping that many coins. Oh well, so I took the receipt to the customer service booth. Had to wait on a lady who was carrying a handful of hand rolled cent and nickel rolls to exchange for bills. After she finished I stepped up to the window and handed the clerk the receipt. With his usual smile he asks, "Anything else?" To which I replied, "Yeah, I will take those rolls as well." "Seriously?" he asks. I just nodded. He laughed and handed me the $15 worth of rolls and $60 cash. So I just sat down and broke into the five rolls of nicks. The first 4 were a complete bust. The last one was a little different. No, I did not get a whole roll of Buffs like another member did last week. This last roll contained coins dated from 1939-1964 ONLY. There were no silver ones, and not noticeable doubled dies. I just thought it was a bit odd. Oh, I did score my first "Bar" nickel in that roll. And I rambled on this long to present you this.

Nice thread seal006 ... I've generally had better luck with customer rolled nickels than those from the bulk distribution centers ... congratulations indeed on that one successful roll.
Despite all my years of chasing coins I've never heard the term 'Bar Nickel' ... I can see by you fine photograph there is likely a die chip below the zero in the date.
Hopeful that you (or someone) can explain what is meant by the term.

David, I am still learning nickels. OcalaFlorida is the man to ask about nicks, and of course you. I have been told that it is a chip of sorts that has been seen on 1960-1962 nicks. I had never seen one until a few members posted photos last week or the week before. This is the first one to my knowledge that I have ever run across.

nickelsearcher: As far as I know, the term "Bar nickel" has been around a long time referring to the bar shaped chips that form in between the rim and letters/numbers closest to the rim, without being a Cud. It's not too common, but common enough that it was given a name. Neat find seal006 by the way ;D

Nice find Seal, Did you find any 1950D's per chance? That is the only key date I remember off hand from your original Nickel post.

Nope, no 50D, 39D, or 39S. I believe that is the big three. I did find about 15 or so I could use in the three circulated sets I am working on though. I am happy. The cent rolls were a bust. But hey, you cannot find if you do not search. That is what keeps me going. Plus it is cheaper and safer than drinking.

that's a nice bar zero nickel... you never have to look to hard to find them as you check the dates anyway... The bar zero- "Bar 0" is an die chip on the rim connecting the digit of the date to the rim which makes it actually a very small Cud. They are also found on 1961. here is an 1961 they can effect several digits or letters also

I posted the Bar Nickel last week. for some reason it was my first - after collecting many years. Yesterday I found my second.

Yes, so much of it crosses denominational lines, it eases the transition. I went from nickels to nickels and pennies. Found I can look at a penny 3x faster, but still like the nickels best. Wasn't too crazy about the moderns till I got into the Trails.
