I just got an email from Whitman. Well Whitman is stuck in a mess with their attempt to come out with a book way, way to early. They just couldn't come out with a 2008A or 2008-1 or something. NO, they are now advertising the release of the 2009 on April 8, 2008. This is nuts as usual. I can see a few months early as it used to be but 9 MONTHS EARLY? If you know publising you would obviously know that it takes months to accumulate the info for such a book so that means the actual 2009 book was being assembled probably back in September of 2007. What good is this when they couldn't possibly know anything about prices almost a year ahead. This is just dumb. I've written them in the past about why not just keep it going and start issuing them 10 years in advance. No answer of course.

LOL I just got my 2008 today. I guess I should have waited a couple of months. What a joke this RedBook nonsense is. Will there be a day when we can subscribe to the RedBook online and just view this stuff online? That way they can update prices monthly.

I'll probably buy one since I collect them.
Othwise I wouldn't.
Does this rank somewhere with the 2010 Australia one ounce silver Tiger Lunar coin?

JustCarl, I felt the same way WITH THE "2008" edition ! Ha Ha It came out so early in the year and had some stuff there that was unknown yet or incomplete with the 2007 coins ! I thought to myself that this seemed rediculous and why not WAIT until they know for sure about everything and what's being released and when etc. etc. etc. The way I saw it, the 2008 version was only really complete for 2006 coins.........if even that ! Very good point here Carl ! That's something I've been stewing about and been confused about for awhile !

For a while most people thought because the 2007 was the 60th anniversary edition, it would be something special. It wasn't. It was just another edition and way, way to early. Then some thought OK so now there will be a 2007+ or 2007A or something like that in the Fall. No way. Whitman now sticks to coming out almost a year early. This is dumb, dumber and just DUMB.

The 2008 edition had to be prepared so early that it included a series of coins that were proposed and which look like a shoo-in to be approved but which never were made. I'm talking about th 90% silver President dollars which are listed and priced in the book.

leave it to the smart guys to figure out a way of printing an almost useless publication... the online book would be a great idea--you could charge services, subscriptions, etc...huge draw for collectors---why hsn't that been done I wonder

RedBook is well known for being a yearly price guide with useful information for collectors about the coins, their mintages etc and a good general all around guide. They are in the market to print and sell their books which they do for people who want to use them as a general guide, or people who collect them, or have heard of it and are just getting into collecting. Their procedure is set up to accumulate and set prices for a yearly publication so they would probably have to change a lot of things about the way to work to do constantly updated prices. There are other sources out there for people to keep up on more current values, and plus everyone knows how subjective prices are to begin with, and how often and quickly they can change.

I wouldn't call the best selling coin book year in and year out "almost useless" quote: you could charge services, subscriptions, etc...huge draw for collectors---why hasn't that been done I wonder
It already is done- its called the CDN(Coin Dealer's Newsletter aka Greysheet) and you can purchase a yearly subscription for about 10x the cost of a RedBook. I purchase a RedBook every year and it is worn out by the time the next edition comes out. I use my RedBook as a running collection inventory. I take it with me to coin shows, bid board, and wherever I may run into coins. Every year, it gets all marked up with ink and highlighter as I cross off coins or mark coins I want to get. I can go back a few years and reminisce about what I was after that year and see how my collection and collecting interests have changed over the years. The fact is that there is no better easy reference for coins than the RedBook. Price magazines do not list mintage figures or have pictures of popular die varieties. Yes, the prices are not up to date, but the trends hold just the same. If RedBook lists a coin at $50 in EF but jumps to $300 in AU that is all I need to tell me that an AU is out of my price range regardless of actual value. Unless you are chasing after coins that have constant price shifts (i.e. high dollar graded coins for the most part) the prices in RedBook will usually be close.
