I have a small box of assorted U.S coins where I put lower value, low grade or damaged coins. I recently received my copy of the new Bust Dime Identification guide (very handy and easy to use), so I decided to attribute a couple of CBDs in that box. This low grade 1821 looks interesting. I think it is the JR-2 variety, which is described as R-5 in the guide, but R6+ and R-7 at the major auction houses.

The coin is low grade, but it has all markers for the JR-2 variety, namely the position of '1' in the date on the reverse, and the position of the motto on reverse. The weakness and later bulge shown at stars 2, 3 (caused by a die crack) is typical of the variety and evident on this coin.

Would be great If somebody could comment on and/or confirm this.

Always check your 'junk' boxes, you never know what you may have in them!

The placement of the 1 in relation to the hair curl and the placement of the C to the branches look correct to me.

Thank you very much for your comments TypeCoin971793.

It would be great if this were a JR-2, as it seems to be.
I probably thought it was just a worn, low grade CBD (due to the weakness in front of the bust), and never thought much of it.

Yes, the new Dime ID Guide has it as R-5 as well, so the rarity has come down as more are found. So probably anywhere up to 35-50 known, from only 16 or so not so long ago.

This appears to be the case for many previously rare varieties in the series that I collect (large cents, quarters, dimes). It probably happens across the board.

Rest in Peace

Rarity only heads in one direction. It may become more common, it virtually never becomes more scarce/rare.

So it went from an R-7(4 to 12) Extremely rare to a R-5 (31-75) known in the new book?
Finest seen is a VF-25 has that changed as well?

This is the now the finest known: 1821 JR-2
An amazing coin from the Pogue Collection recently sold by Stacks/Bowers. MS66.

The new Dime ID guide rates JR-2 as R-5. I don't know what the JRCS census lists it at, but I would think it is the same.

From the reading I've done since I found mine yesterday, the more knowledgeable collectors are calling it now Mid. R-5

Another interesting example of how rarity ratings evolve over time is the 1829 JR-10, with Curled-Base 2. JR-10 is also a Red-Book variety.

1829 JR-10 has traditionally been considered as very scarce to rare
(R-7). It is now rated R-5 in the 2015 Dime ID Guide with 40 examples of this variety confirmed, and at least 50-60 firmly thought to exist by the more knowledgeable CBD collectors.

It just dawn on me that the information I'm learning from was printed in 1984.
Just order the new dime variety guide for $49 from Rich and as an excuse picked up a 1824 dime that was on sale.

The Dime ID guide is handy and easy to use. Great pictures as well.

Being a recent publication (2015), the Guide seems to use the latest census figures to assign rarity ratings, so that is very useful as well.
