I am thinking about buying one of these Canon MP-E 65 mm f/2.8 lens. just wondering has anybody here tried one of these lens. my other choice is Sigma EX MACRO IF 150mm F/2.8 EX AF DG HSM APO Lens. this would probably give me the distance. to eliminate the lens shadow. but the canon lens. would do two things. give me 1 to 1 and the other give me a magnification of 5 to 1 for coin searching. has anybody here tried these 2 lens. any inpute would be greatly appreciated. thank you

There was a thread on that lens back a while, IIRC (and I'd search to find it to check my memory), the working distance was so small as to make lighting a big problem. The 100mm was a better choice.

Might try this lens first before spending a lot of money. I purchased it for my canon and I am very pleased with the results. http://www.ebay.com/itm/YONGNUO-YN-...em5d5fdbadab

A 50mm Enlarger lens reversed will also get you close to five times magnification. I have also thought about the MPE 65mm. To be honest I think I only wanted it as another toy( for use on my sony camera) rather than any real need. Reversed my SK 50mm F 2.8 can get me that 5 X at considerably less cost than the MPe

For use at 4x and 5x, how does the image quality from a cheap 4x or 5x microscope objective compare to the Canon MP-E 65mm and enlarger lenses?

A decent 4x or 5x objective will put the MPE65 to shame.

When I say "decent" I mean a Nikon 4Plan, M5, or similar that cost <$50. NA on these is 0.1. In this mag range, NA>0.1 get a lot more expensive, though still cheaper than the 65MPE.

Canon MP-E 65 mm f/2.8. I was thinking about purchasing this lens. I have been reading a lot about a lens that. I believe will blow this lens out of the water. but the complaint people are having about the lens is it to sharp. the lens makes most coins look like junk. models was complaining. that it even exposed covered up flaws on there facial skin. I have seen this kind of hype before. I may get a chance to borough one of these lens. to try it see what I get. if it good I will post some images. if its not I wont bother. have a great one

If 4x and 5x are better covered by modest microscope objectives, that leaves the 1x to 3x range. At 1x, I wonder if the MPE65 can outdo 1x-optimized lenses like the APO-Rodagon-D 75mm 1x (75ARD1) or the Olympus 80mm/4 bellows lens?

At 2x and 3x, which should be the center of the range for the MPE65, how does the MPE65 compare to lenses like the Canon MacroPhoto 35mm/2.8 (MP35) or the Olympus 38mm/2.8 bellows lens (ZAM38?)

I suppose there's always the convenience factor in having one lens cover the whole 1x-5x range, rather than switching among the specialized lenses.

I have not tested the MPE65 so can't definitively say how well it performs, but by my understanding of reviews, it does very well at 1x, though not quite up the the level of a 1x-optimized lens such as the 75ARD1. At 2-3x, nothing beats the 35MP, not even the 95PN.

I have never been compelled to buy a MPE65 since it can't go below 1x. I can use a 75ARD1 from 0.3...2x or so and it does very well. I don't generally shoot between 2-3x, but if I did I'd use a 35MP. At 4x-10x I shift to microscope objectives.

I have always wanted to try out the Minolta AF Macro Zoom 3X-1X f/1.7-2.8. I am not so tempted to buy it though. It was the only AF macro ( really Auto zoom) ever produced. I doubt I will ever get to try one out as they are coveted collectors items and usually demand high prices. Too high to buy and try.

How do the Zeiss Luminar lenses stack up against the Canon MP35mm?

I've owned a few of the Luminars and never found them to be worth using due to corner sharpness issues. The 63mm is coveted by collectors but is no match against the 35MP in the 2-6x range.
